slide shows, music and copyrights I got some sofware for making slide shows, and I think this is a great marketing idea, people love these things. so I have been brainstorming on how to go about it and copyright popped in my head. I have about 13 gigs of music (hubby and I combined) but if I make a dvd, use my songs, then sell the dvd...am I breaking copyright? I think I am...but what if I make the slide show and use the customers music? I would think that would be ok. Does anyone know or know where I can research this specifically, google is turing out too much info...copyright is a big subject.

I don't think you can market a DVD even using music from a customer unless they hold the rights to the songs being used. Any use of copyrighted music for monetary gain would have to be paying the copyrighted artist royalties. Most commercial slide show programs you pay more for than personal slide show programs, due to the software company already paying to bundle certain music with the software that they have paid royalties to use.

What I do (because of copyright issues) is purchase Royalty Free Music (also called buy out music). Most of what I have is piano music, but it sets the mood. There are some musicians out there who will let you use their music for free as long as you give them credit. HTH,
