I am a wedding photographer purchasing my first digital equip. I am about to purchase the canon 20d with the 17-85 and 70-300 lenses. Am I making a good choice? any suggestions?

I have a 20D and I really like it. My main question is what you use for weddings currently. My second is where are you buying it from?

I use minolta 9 currently and I am buying them from a store on ebay. I have purchased items on ebay before with no problems and I know to look for good feedback. this store has 99%
it is Barclay photo.

I think the 17-85 should be fine but I'm not sure about the 70-300. If it has IS (Image Stabilization) like the other lens does it would be better. You should be able to get some pretty good pictures with it though. I would try to stay away from the full 300mm length when using it. Plus, if you can use a tripod or monopod or I should say if you have one, that would be a big plus. I wouldn't think churches would be lit well or receptions so my first though was that the 70-300 might be a little slow at letting in light so definitly a monopod. Make sure to budget memory cards too. If you already have good quality glass for the minolta though I might have gone for something like the *ist D or maybe one of the newer models. I'm not 100% on minolta though, but I know that I do like my 20D so I'm sure you will too. Just seeing if it would save you money to stay with minolta. I'm sure you'll be happy with it though. Also, check to make sure that all the cords and any necessary software are needed.

I try to think of something else if I can.

I thought about the minolta digital but they only go up to 6mp and the lowest I wanted was 8. what do you use your canon for?

I started out using my canon at my university's newspaper for a semester, and then I got off of that for a while and now I think I'm going to work on getting more assignments now that I may have more free time. Some of the assignments I took before were photographing a specific player during football practice, a fashion show at a local bar/grill, even highlights, and a few concerts in which I was VERY thankfull to have splurged by getting the Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L. It was just over $600 but it's definitly my sharpest lens.

Other than that, I've used it for portraits to try to build up a portfolio before I apply for a job, and then most of it has been for my own photography. Recently I went to a bison ranch around where I live and I added 6 pictures a few days ago to my gallery from that trip. I take photo classes as well and while I'm only in intermediate black and white photo using film, the higher classes use digital so I'll probably be using the 20D for that when I get there.

On another note, from what I've read, there isn't that much differnce from 6mp to 8. But of course, I believe the camera has better things to offer than just two million extra pixels.
