Photography Question

Teri Soares

Editorial Photos

What is an editorial photo? How is it different from any other image? Can you sell an editorial? Do you have to have a model or property release for them? Can you enter one in a BP contest without a model release?

Thanks to anyone who can respond.

By loose definition, editorial photography is visual depiction of people and/or events that are used either by themselves or with stories of general or specific interest.

Editorial work is basically divided into two areas: Photojournalism wherein the photographer tries to tell a story that stands on its own using photos or a photo essay. Documentary work or day-in-the-life pieces is a sub-division of photojournalism but this kind of work is done more specifically for social and/or historical purposes. Both these types of work require the photographer to shoot it as they see it and not modify or direct a particular scene or its participants.

The second major area of editorial work is illustration and portraiture which requires the photographer to create or stage photographs that visually describe a particular concept or personality as directed by an art director, writer or editor.

Yes, editorial photographs require a model or property release. That would/should include contest entries because potentially, those photos will be published and to publish requires a release. BTW the news exception to the model release rule is rapidly becoming extinct as it's eroded in a number of jurisdictions by a series of state court decisions on privacy issues.

Oh, and traditionally, editorial work provides the added benefit of photo credit adjacent to the published photo whereas advertising work does not. Course, advertising work pays a lot better than editorial work.

Get the picture Teri?? ;>)
Be well

Hi...interesting thread. I have a question about "model" releases. I have a photo on my gallery "Down & Out...Still Human". I thought I was okway with this, as you can't see the person's face...should I have gotten a release and should I withdraw that photo from my gallery? Thanks for any help.

Hi Corinne ! The rule is that you need a release if they are recognizable in any way. I looked. In my opinion, remembering that you get what you pay for , I wouldn't worry about a release for that shot. Although arguably someone might recognize his unique combination of jeans with sneakers.

HEY !! I have a suggestion though. Your shot entitled Moonlight... Change the name to Moon Light. Get it/....Moon Light. (Moon on the left, light on the right...two words...:>)))

Oh, and the Chicago Theater sign... brought fond memories back to my brain. I saw my first movie there when I was a kid.

Take care.
Mark

Thanks for the help Mark, I appreciate it. The MoonLight shot it named that way because I was trying to imply exactly what you said :)...Thats why I capitalized the "L" in light. Maybe I will split it though. And (memory test) what was the name of the movie? Do you still live in Chicago? How come you don't have a gallery? Thanks for looking at mine.

Wow !! Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. The second movie I saw there was Phantom of the Opera with Herbert Lom, I think. There was this fantastic carmel corn place a couple of blocks away, on Madison at State St. A bunch of us would go downtown, score a bunch of carmel corn and then play "Rush the Ticket Taker" at either the State Lake or the Chicago. LOL !!!

Nope, I live about 3 blocks from the ocean in Northern California, not far from San Francisco.

I don't have a gallery for a few reasons. Mainly, I'm concerned (as is my rep) that someone will figure out a way to either print and pirate some of my images. Also, I'm digitally impaired. :>0 I shoot nearly everything on film and don't scan it. I use two excellent labs for processing film and printing. I'll only use a digital camera when I'm forced into it by an editor in a hurry, like on a news assignment.

I like your stuff Corinne. Take care.
M.

  Hi Mark!
Sounds like you have great memories of the Chicago area!
My sister just moved back to IL from the SF area...I was able to visit once...it's beautiful. I loved the Marin Headlands and Monterey area. My brother lives in Folsom (not prison :P).
I understand your reasons for not having a gallery...I was just hoping to see your work. Thanks again!
