Lens for Shooting Available Light in the Classroom

I have the Canon XT with the 50mm f/1.8, 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM , 18-55mm kit lens, 420ex with stroboframe and omnibounce.

I need a lens to take photos in my son's 1st grade classroom, mainly with available light. I do use the bounce flash, too, depending on the school activity I'm shooting. I take the photos for the teacher, the yearbook and also have done slide shows for special events and as a present for the teacher.

The 50mm isn't wide enough. I toggle back and forth between the 18-55 when I need group shots and the 28-135 for individual shots. I'd love to have the flexibility and unobtrusiveness of a zoom.

I am also getting the 70-200 f/4 L.

I mainly use the 50mm and 28-135 lenses - shooting mainly kids at the beach and outdoors.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Well, Jouce - it seems to me you already know that you require a faster wide angle lens for use in available light...so that could be the Canon f2.8 16-35 (I think that's the focal length) or perhaps Sigma's new 35MM f1.4 prime lens. I mean, if you don't have enough light and cannot use the flash and don't want to use too slow a shutter speed, a faster lens is the only alternative.

Thanks, Bob. Appreciate your suggestions! Yep, knew I needed a faster wide angle, I wanted to get recommendations from folks on which lens they preferred. I've read a ton of reviews but I wanted to get some first-hand experience from my fellow BP'ers.

Well, I have the Nikkor 17-35 f2.8 - it's a great lens and I hear Canon's is just a great - I don't know anything about the Sigma prime, except since it's 2 stops even faster it might be the better choice, given your need for maximal light-gathering power.
