Ricoh XRP won't fire

My Ricoh XRP won't work with my Rikenon P lenses made for it but works fine with a 2X multipler and 80-200 zoom in KAR mt for Ricoh and Pentax. The mirror seems to move part way up and stop, if I start to take the lens off, about a 1/4 inch turn and the mirror goes up shutter fires, but mirror doesn't return unless I turn the lens all the way to the point of removing it.

Since the camera is working fine with one lens, it seems to me that the problem is with the lens(es) that it isn't working with. Sounds like maybe the aperture mechanism is stiff or jamming - maybe needs a clean and lube or the actuating lever is bent?

The problem with your XR-P is likely due to movement of the mirror and not a problem with your lens. I own several XR-P cameras and have had to fix then when they exhibited the same problem as your XR-P. Basically, the mirror "slides down" a bit with every shutter release over time. This is caused by the lack of adequate adhesion of the mirror to the mirror plate. You will notice the lower edge of your mirror sticks out over the mirror back plate. When the mirror tries to rotate, the mirror's extended edge gets caught with a lens attached (and sometimes w/o the lens too).

The remedy to the problem is moving the mirror back (VERY CAREFULLY) into it's normal position using a hair dryer and applying a VERY small amount of adhesive to the edge of the mirror to keep it in position. This repair works!!!

Thanks Jeff, I kinda thought that was what was happening and the mirror does stick out a bit. Tried to put a little pressure on the edge to see if it would move back up but it doesn't. Do I need to heat it up 1st?

Yes. You definitly need to use a hair dryer to heat up the mirror and more importantly the existing adhesive under the mirror. Once the mirror is warm, you can CAREFULLY push the mirror back into place (by the edge only!!!). I typically place a VERY VERY VERY SMALL drop of Krazy Glue on the extended underside of the mirror as I slide the mirror back to hold the mirror in place. I highly recommend you practice heating and moving the mirror one time to make sure the new mirror alignment is good BEFORE permanently gluing the mirror. Don't rush this. You need to get it right. Once you glue the mirror, you're done forever!!!
Good luck.

Good to hear both you and your Ricoh XR-P are now "on the mend". I am about to perform the same mirror repair on my son's Ricoh KR-30SP.

I too have several 35mm SLR's and my favorites of the bunch are my two Ricoh XR-Ps. The XR-P viewfinder is very user friendly for both manual and automatic modes. Also, the TTL flash control system is excellent. The camera is loaded with just about every possible function one would need from a manual focus camera. For this reason, I have not switched to digital. I will eventually switch to digital when the cost of film/film processing is prohibitive or my Ricoh XR-Ps die.

Be sure to eat the right foods and exercise regularly!(my wife is a cardiac outpatient nurse)

Jeff
