Photography Question

Which Canon lenses are most important when i buy m

I am purchasing a Canon 20D from bestpricecameras.com, and Im not sure which "package" I should buy. The package differences come down to selection of lenses included, i.e., 28-702.8-4 AF and a 70-300AF lenses included OR 28-105 and a 75-300--and those are just TWO of the potential packages. I shoot sports(motion) where I really need zoom-I also take people and nature. Any help would be appreciated on picking right package. Ive been studying manuals and websites and am just not swift when it comes to understanding the lingo regarding what the various lenses attributes are. Thanks very much everyone..

  Joy,
I would urge you to avoid bestpricecameras.com

Search the Q&A here and you will find many comments from unhappy customers. Their low prices are just what they look like -- too good to be true. When you place your order, you'll find that their low price does NOT include all the accessories that Canon normally includes in the box. You will need to pay extra for the battery, the battery charger, the software, cables, etc. They will overcharge you for these items, and in the end, you will not come out ahead.

You would be much better off shopping at a reputable dealer like bhphotovideo.com. You won't really pay much more in the long run, and in return you'll get honest customer support.

Chris

buy anything with an "L" on it and a red stripe...
lol just kidding, unless your really rich! The 50mm f1.8 is a must have as is my next purchase, the 85MM 1.8 are both wise choices to have in your collection.

I love my 28-135 IS and my little Tamron 28-200 AF XR macro.

PLEASE DO SOME MORE RESEARCH , IF CHRIS IS SAYING THIS PATICULAR COMPANY HAS BEEN THE TOPIC OF NEG. CONVERSATION-I WOULD STAY AWAY.
I HAVE BOUGHT FROM DIGICORP A EBAY SELLER AND HAVE HAD GREAT RESULTS.
HERES A LINK TO A CANON 20D KIT 4 LENS $1808.00:
http://cgi.ebay.com/CANON-EOS-20D-Digital-SLR-4000-4-LENSES-SHOOTER-KIT_W0QQitemZ7577287805QQcategoryZ43454QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
(NOW THE WIDE ANGLE LENS ADAPTOR WASN'T A INTREST TO ME- SO I SOLD IT ON EBAY AND USED THE MONEY FROM THAT TO BUY A TAMERAC WIDE ANGLE,JUST A THOUGHT_

BUT OF THE TWO PACKAGES I WOULD CHOOSE THE 28-105 and a 75-300.
THE 28-105 LENS WILL BE GOOD FOR PORTRAITS AND THE OTHER FOR SOME LONGRANGE FUN(I GET A LOT OF USE OUT OF MY 300- BUT MY 100 IS ALWAYS ON THE CAMERA)

Hi Joy - If you have the budget the best and fastest lens (sports) would be the Canon 70-200/2.8L IS USM. I just purchased an EOS 20D, w/EF-S 17-85mm IS USM and a EF 70-300 IS USM lenses. I do landscapes, architecture and abstract. What I can say it is worth every cent for IS(image stabilization, especialy for sports and nature. Back to the 70-200 - Evrey review and comment I have seen, this lens is an A+++. Great for sports, good for nature and at 70mm - good portraits. Hope this helps. Cheers - Glenn.

Joy - One more thing - I purchased my equipment from B&H. Excellent sellers. I agree with Deb & Chris - Stay AWAY from bestpricecamera's or any other seller that has a price "too good to be true". Cheers - GLenn

Joy - I agree with Glenn if you can afford the canon 70-200 2.8L go for it. I have this lens (I saved a long time for this lens), I shoot a lot of High school football and basket ball. This lens is totally awesome prior to the 70-200 I got by with canon 70-300 f3.5 (I think, I haven't touched it since I bought the 70-200 2.8L). Hope this helps.

By the the way I use samyscamera.com for on line purchases, very good service plus they are so cal based (as I am) if there is a problem I can resolve it immediately.

Ian

Wow--Thankyou all for your advice!! Problem is now Im a little more Unsure of the choice I've made, i.e., Do I really need the 20D?? My first digital
(3yrs.ago)was the Minolta Dimage 7i(7xoptcal zoom) on which the program switch stopped working so I could no longer take "action" photos. When I was told it was $200 just to send it away to be looked at, I was advised to invest in a new camera instead.
I know the Canon name of course, and was looking for an SLR because I figured that could be a camera to be with me for 15 years (like my first Pentax film camera (purchased at a tag sale!) and still working great today!!) and allow me to get creative with different lenses. Bottomline--I never really figured out all that my Dimage could do and what all the buttons were for-even after reading that manual!! So, would you all advise me to go in another direction? Also, if I stick with the Canon-the best deal seems to be a package direct from Canon which includes the 18-55 lense (I'll stay away from bestprice.com!)--would that be sufficient?? You all are wonderful--Im soooo grateful I found this website--Thanks again for your advisal..Best,Joy

  Joy,
so many are very happy with the Cannon 20D, but after using them both, I personaly am happier with the Nikon D70.
I find it easier to use and not as pricey.
But this is just my thoughts and the first pry at a can of worms, lol.
Nikon vs Cannon really just preferance.
I always loved Cannon, went Nikon for several reasons, not having anything to do with operations-everyone I had working for me was working Nikon an dI had the Fuji S2 witch uses the same mounts. So just more toys to play with at the time-so Nikon it was.
But,I am happy I did.

Ok--Ill check out the D70--and Ill look at the 20D Shooter kit you mentioned above with the 4 lenses. That way I'll have a good feel for which lenses you feel are most important since you are certainly far more experienced than I!! Thank you very much again Debby--Joy
