Photography Question

Marty R. Adams

How to just sell the prints of good pictures

I am not really new to photography but I am not an expert either. I would like to know about selling my prints or pictures in either 4x6, 5x7, 11x17, on canvas, etc. to the public. I have some really good shots and love to just take pictures. I enjoy just people asking me to be at some event to take pictures. They love them. On the other question. I am new to photoshop and can do a good bit but I wanted to know of a good online tutorial that would walk me through step by step with maybe video, screenshotes, etc. My degree is in computer science so I am fluent in the pc, mac, etc. Any help would be most appreciated.

regards,
Marty

While you're not being very specific about what you want to know about "selling" your prints, my suggestion is that you build a portfolio and start hauling it door-to-door to places that might be willing to display your work (with or without a fee) and either take orders for you or put people who want to order in touch with you. E.g. local bookstores, coffee houses, framing shops, ad infinitim.

Oh, and don't quit your day job. :>))

Mark I have a question for you.

If I wanted to try and sell some of my photo ball images to jigsaw puzzle companies do I just email them online and ask if they be interested?

Or would you have a better idea to do this.

Thank you for your time,

Kerby

Thanks for each of you that responded. I am looking for other photographers that know the ropes and greatly appreciate your advice. I am looking to sell prints like any size 8x10, 11x17, or some on canvas if they want that. I am going to set some up in our local frame shops, coffee houses, family, etc. I am also going to do some post cards and have some local gift shops if they would consider selling. This is a lot of work but I love photography so much I feel I have to give it a go. I know I will have to get better at Photoshop also. The wife is finishing her schooling after 14 years, and three kids in school, braces, etc. (you guys know), I am a bit limited to investing until I can sell a few prints. I am a wood worker so I can make some real nice frames. Keep on posting. Also email me anytime at either m130@charter.net or marty.adams@adtran.com. I would love to hear from each of you. BTW, I plan to have a website and registered on some good search engines such as Google as well. That is later in the year probably. Again, I can tell you how glad I was that you guys responded. I have never met an unfriendly fellow photographer...

Regards,
Marty

Greetings Kerby: I'm not exactly sure how to approach puzzle companies. I would assume that it's similar to a stock agency or publication. If so, get the names of the puzzle outfits, perhaps you can find them in a book called (oddly enough "Photographers Market" which is published every year by Writers Digest. Get the names of the editors, send them sample prints with your copyright clearly marked offering to sell them images for use on their puzzles and see what kind of responses you get. These days, while e-mail is popular, I think I still get better responses to marketing suggestions when I send editors a real letter with an actual print or duplicate transparency.

And...Marty, yep, as I mentioned in my earlier suggestion, I think you're probably on the right track. Selling turn-key mounted and framed prints is pretty much a door-to-door sales deal unless you've got a representative doing it for you...say like your wife now that she's about done with school. :>) That should free up your time to use the shaper, planer, chop saw and do the finishing work. As you know I'm sure, yours is a very labor intensive business but not unlike what I do from time to time for a local gallery with some of my work.

Take it light.
Mark

Mark have you heard of zazzle.com

It where you submit your images and they give you ten percent when someone orders from your images (Tshirts, posters, postage stamps (real postage stamps) , greeting cards, ect).

I signed up today for the program but wondered if you knew anyone doing this or if you know anything about it.

Does it work well? It looks pretty good but I like to find out more about it before I put I put up a lot of images into it.

  Mark,
You are a true inspiration to me. I am glued to this sight for the reason that I know you guys will help me out. I will keep on keeping on. I don't plan to get on "lifestyles of The Rich and Famous" but could the extra money for bills and an occasional accessory or two.

Kindest regards,
Marty

Greetings Kerby and Marty: Nope, I've never heard of Zazzle.com. Just make sure before you upload anything, that you read and thoroughly understand the terms of their agreement with you. And, if you disagree with any of the terms (of any web site for that matter), either don't sign up or tell them what you disagree with and ask them to change it.

Marty, I'm flattered. Honestly. I'll be glad to help you out when I can. As for what you propose to do with your prints, just start small and see where it leads you. I have a cousin that started making head bands for women. She used her bedroom for production and had a friend or two helping her after school. After awhile, she showed them to a buyer at a local department store. They ordered 12 dozen. Ultimately, she started making ladies fashion accessories, coats, AND still the head bands. It turned into a real U.S. corporation and her stuff is in every major domestic department store.

And remember..."Great spirits often encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds." Albert Einstein.

Take care guys.
Mark

I looked at Zazzle but had some problems with their licensing agreement. I think that many of you who want to control your images will have that problem, too.

If you read Zazzle's licensing agreement, once you upload your image and agree to let them sell it for you, they can take your image and sell it ANYWHERE. That's right. Only want your mage on a postcard, or stamp? Too bad! If Zazzle wants to publish a calendar, etc., then they get to decide whether or not to use your image, and you will get a pittance (10% of whatever part of the calendar they deem is your share).

Zazzle's deal is great for Zazzle, but if you want to do other things with your images, then it isn't so great for you.

Read the fine print carefully!

John thank you very much for looking it over. I really appriciate it. SOmetimes I am not the best at doing that.

IF a company uses your images for a postcard or calendar what percentage is a fair price to get for your image?

Do they usually give the percentage per postcard or calendar sold? Or how does that work?

I am a fairly new photographer and I am not even sure my work would be something like a major company would want to purchase but what percentage does a person get if a company uses your images on a calendar or postcard?

Thank you for any information you can offer.

Kerby

Does anyone know where I can get a book or have someone loan me to use to show the different types of canvas (one they can feel) that they could get my prints on? I am wanting to get the types of canvas and the prints into the same portfolio. Is this possible in an out of the box thing or do I just need to get scraps and make it myself?

Thanks,
Marty
