How to photograph Plasma Balls?

Hello everyone! Happy Christmas!

I just got a Plasma Ball for christmas and was entranced with how beautiful it was and immediately wanted to photograph it. I've been having problems so far!

Of course to pick up the detail it would have to be photographed in the dark. And no flash as BUT as the electricity is moving, to get a decent exposure there's a lot of vapour trails as over 2 seconds theres a lot of movement ;) So I set my Canon EOS 300D to Auto-W and set the exposure to low. Perfect capture of the plasma threads but obviously really low resolution and jaggy and grainy due to the lack of light.

Is it an impossible task, like photographing clouds or scenery at the same time as a full moon? Or are there any tips? This first image is the best I could do with quick exposure, the second image is on slow exposure.
