Jason, you are merely mentioning brands here - it's like asking which is a better car: Honda, Nissan or Toyota.

In the old days, brand name lenses (like Nikon or Canon) produced by the company that makes the cameras themselveswere considered to be superior than the so-called third party lenses (back then that was Vivitar and SOligor - today it's SIgma, Tamron and Tokina). Of course, back then the branded lenses cost more (sometimes 2-3 times as much) as thier "lesser brand" counterparts.

Times have changed - in their efforts to get more people to buy their lenses, the brand name companies have produced some less expensive offerings. Meanwhile, the 3rd parties guys havebeen getting better and better. And in the end, they all produce some excellent lense, and some dogs.

So, while Nikon in general is considered to be a "better" brand - depending on the particular lens it could wel be that the SIgma or Tamron version is just as good or better, at less cost (since you're not paying fo the brand name prestige).
