Help with Nikon People

Geez, I'm sick of Nikon. I couldn't find a phone number on their site and I'm stuck in a loop trying to use the site with my account which has never worked. I got 1-800-645-6687 out of a Google search, after ten minutes on hold, got someone who transferred me, on hold another 30 min. and I hung up. I want to update the firmware for my D70, only one authorized Nikon rep. in whole Denver area and they don't do it--"haven't had good luck with that." Told me I'd have to send the camera to Nikon but didn't have a numbef for them. What a messed up rigarmarolle!!! This hobby is losing it's appeal, it is certainly not easy or fun with the never-ending technical crap. Does anyone have any suggestion on how I can better deal with Nikon and get support?

  Laura,
Updating your firmware is not a terribly complicated operation. This is normally done by the camera user, you don't send it in.

The update was not hard to find on Nikon's website. The link for it was very long though, I hope I pasted it correctly.

Try clicking
HERE.

This page has a link to click to download, and very detailed instructions for performing the update.

Good luck,
Chris

Thanks, Chris. I have those instructions from the site, I just don't want to do it myself since the site recommends using an authorized Nikon tech if one doesn't feel comfortable with it AND that one lone person in Denver doesn't even feel comfortable with it...I think I'm just overwhelmed with the technology involved in trying to make a picture, I'm sick to death of it.

Maybe your problem is Nikon. lol! switch to canon! j/k, or you could even switch to film. i've never heard of firmware! lol, just playin with ya. good luck though. if you follow the directions to the T you should be alright, i've heard of others updating firmware on their own.

Thanks, Justin. Maybe film is the new way to escape technology. LOL backatcha...your sense of humor is useful right now.

Firmware means software that is necessary to operate a particular company's product. I had a good experience downloading an update for a Nikon scanner driver.

Nikon did tell me to be sure I did not interrupt the download, or I'd end up with a $1400 doorstop.

If you have cable service, your download should go fairly quickly. However, I did a lengthy one with a phone modem. Take every precaution to be sure you can get the download with no interruptions. If you don't have to have your D70 connected to the computer during the download (I would doubt that you would), you can get the update using a faster connection at work or a friend's computer. Just transfer the update to your computer on a Zip disc, CD or something big enough to hold the file.

Many companies are lacking in their support function. Nikon customers deserve better.

Thanks, Doug. I did it last night. The time to worry about making a doorstop was actually very brief, BUT, the lack of service from Nikon is insane, your last sentence says it all. (Glad you still have a scanner, too.)
