Photography Question

Judith McGuire

8 x 12 Photos - Possible?

I am relatively new to digital photography and have experimented once with an online processor. While I LOVE this idea of being able to shoot my JPEG to the nether regions of the States and have a print returned to me, I'm dismayed that they come back cropped. I once heard that to get a full frame photo like you shot you really need an 8x12, not an 8x10. First: Is this true? Second: If so, who can I send my files to online and get in return EXACTLY what I'm seeing on my computer? Name who you think is best.
I guess I should tell you first that I've tried Kodak online and have misgivings about Shutterfly from what I'm seeing in 'preview'.

The majority of pro-labs DO do 8x12s. I've never seen any online labs, but then again I've barely looked. But yes to answer your question 8x12's are "common" for the lack of better words.

To get a full frame photo of digital or 35mm, you have to get an 8x12 since the ratio of the capture medium is 2:3. I use prophotoimaging.com for my work. I have never used their online services (kinda hard to send a roll of 120 film over the internet) but they do offer it and do good work.

  Judith,
I get almost all of my prints from MPIX.com - do a search for mpix here in the Q&A and you will find that many people here have used them.

You can get 8x12 prints from mpix (just about any other size you could think of, also). During the order process, you will see exactly how any image will be cropped (if it needs to be cropped) so there are no surprises.

Chris
