Just the Canon Rebel XT Body or lens kit?

I am about to purchase a Canon Rebel XT. The primary use of my camera is for family functions and for nature shots...I'm an avid hiker and love to take pictures of mountains, etc... I consider myself an advanced amateur photographer. I am wondering if someone can help me to determine if I should just get the lens kit with the Rebel XT or the body and a better lens than the one that comes in the kit. Any recommendations on a lens? Thanks.

Sal: The kit lens is so affordable, you might as well buy it. Of course, you don't say if you already own other lenses.

See the Review of the 18-55mm kit lens at www.photo.net/equipment/canon/efs18-55/review/

That 18-55mm zoom is quite short: wide angle to very short telephoto. One day, you'll also want a telephoto zoom for frame-filling shots of distant subjects. You can find a discussion of that topic at

Hi Sal. I agree that the lens is very affordable, so you may as well. Although I have the same lens kit...and now only very rarely use it. I also have a 100mm macro and a 75-300mm telephoto. I usually end up with one of these!
