Panorama Nodal Points

I bought the RRS equipment for vertical and horizontal equipment. I have not been successful in determing the nodal points for my 70-200 Canon lens, using the two pole process (one close and one far). I cannot tell any difference. I am Moab Utah taking pictures in the national parks. Do I need to determine the nodal points when the subjects are relatively far away? Using a 17-40 mm lens seems to give a lot of distortion particularly with vertical images.
Unrelated. If a digital sensor could be made in the shape of the human retina would problems with depth of field and distortion be lessened?
Thank you. Howard McPherson

I can't answer your nodal question, but to the second issue: if a concave spherical CCD could be produced, then it would reduce or eliminate problems with light fall off and fringing (for wide angle lenses), and no doubt distortion as well. DOF, however, is a result of the aperture itself (you can test this yourself by viewing a distant object through a pinhole - if you wear glasses leave them off - and you will see that through the tiny aperture the object is sharper).

Of course, if such CCDs were made (never mind the technological infeasability of that) lenses would have to be redesigned anyway since the lenses of today are designed for use with a flat plane of focus.
