Photography Question

Building my portfolio

How can I build my portraiture portfolio? I have taken a lot of pictures of my kids and nature, but I want to start doing portraits and I don't have a portfolio. How can I find subjects willing to help me build my portfolio?

This may sound simplistic but just ask. Most people (myself excluded) love to have their pictures taken.

Just to elaborate a bit: Most of us probably started by shooting portraits of family members. And, if you think your work is good enough to sell, then you can offer to basically trade prints for posing. You can offer that to local modeling-type schools. Also, taking a class in portraiture at a local community college will help you build your portfolio and presumably, improve your technique at the same time.

Take it light.

I built my portfolio by shooting photos of my friends and their families. In exchange for being my guinnea pigs, I retouched their photos and gave them all to them on a CD w/ reprint rights. This way, it didn't cost me any money and they got very cheap professional quality prints. This made everyone happy. They loved their pictures and I got a great portfolio.

search for people on modelling sites many do TFP or TFCD which mean you give prints or cd to the model in exchange for their time
email me and I will give you links
All my models are TFCD shoots

I found people in the community and asked them if they would trade photos for modeling. Everyone said yes.

I found a classified type website for people in my area to post things they have up for sale as well as services they provide. I put an ad up in there and I have my first job tomorrow! I have quite a few other's wanting pictures. Thanks for the advice!!

  Kari-

Congrats and good luck. I was wondering about this site you found? Is it like a national site where you can search locally or just a local site?

I don't know if it's national or not. I could ask if there are any more around the country. I was invited to the board by someone who responded to an item I was giving away on freecycle (freecycle.org). You aren't allowed to post services there, well, on my local group, but I was told you can on the other board I posted my ad on. Check out the freecycle group in your area and see if they have the same policy.
