Photography Question

Leah Marshall

Fashion and Beauty Missing from BP

I have been a better photo member for 3 years. I started as a scrub and now, I consider myself a professional photographer. I learned alot from BP and have focused my photography to commercial fashion, beauty and glamour. There are only one or two other such phtographers on BP that I have seen. Mostly, I feel it is because this style of photography is not embraced on BP. Even the fashion/beauty gallery consists mostly of headshots- this is not fashion. My question is ...what's up with that? I would like to continue to learn and grow ain fashion/glamour and wonder if BP is going to do anything to promote more in this exciting and extensive genre of photography.

Hi Leah, I agree with you, and I'm guessing there's not more people taking fashion and glamour because it's easier to take a picture of a leaf than of people and models. Not sure what the answer is other than people take pictures of what they are comfortable with. I looked at your gallery and you take incredible pictures. I know BP now has a fashion course by Bruce Smith, not sure if you seen that or not.

  Hi Leah,
Thanks for your interest in BetterPhoto ... and congrats on your success in shooting such beautiful fashion-and-beauty images!

Thanks, Joe, for pointing out Bruce Smith's outstanding 8-week online course right here at BetterPhoto:
Fashion and Beauty: Intro to Fashion Photography

Bruce was brought on board to address this issue. He's a very experienced fashion shooter ... if you haven't already, check out his Premium Gallery - not all head shots either :-)

Thanks again for your interest!

I often wonder about the same thing.
I wish I could switch my career focus from Fashion Design/Patternmaking to Photography (if I get good enough).

Leah, you have a definate advantage that not too many others do fashion. However, I think in time, BP will expand to include this genre. Maybe it hasn't yet, because some fashion photography is a little racy (not that your photos are). Also, I agree with Joe about the Model/leaf comparison.
By the way, great images in your gallery. You said you were a beginner when you first joined here, and now you are so good. Did you have any other training?

Thanks. I love Bruce's work and would like to get to his level at some point. And I spoke to him about taking the class. I dont have any formal training in photography, but I would like to say that I took the lessons I learned from BP -Photographing flowers and other classes I took and applied them to shooting models. I used to participate in all BP stuff and looked forward to it, but now, I feel like my work- which is good- doesnt get recognized. It is not my imagination that the work that gets recognized is "stock" style or cutsie and artsie...what about the rest of us? I am glad that some of the members see where I am coming from.

I hope to take some classes, here as well.
Your story is inspiring. As for me, I am now where you were 3 years ago, except that I'm not working. I've been in and out
of Fashion school for several years but, I don't like that anymore (for a carreer). I'm clueless about where to begin and I just want to learn as much as I can.
What class, from here, could you reccomend to a novice, like myself?
Best of luck to you ~ jasmine

I took Fine Art flowers with Tony Sweet. Understanding Xposure & Learning to See Creativly with Brian Petersen(sp?) They were great and gave me great fundamentals. I think it is easier to shoot mundate objects , and people you know to start, so you get a basic idea of lighting and how to set up the shot compositionally.

Thanks for the kind words.

  Leah,
Maybe I'm confused again, but I think the critique discussion for one of your photos was removed was removed.

I looked over your gallery and it is very nice. You do some excellent work in fashion and beauty.

Like Joe said it easier to go take a picture of a leaf or a tree than it is to shoot people.

For me I look for the very best looking people I can find (like my ten year model) and most of the time the pictures of her are really good.

I shot several of her friends and I do not the quality I get with her.

The key is have the image turn out no matter who your shooting.

My favorite type of photography is shooting people but I do not feel I am on a solid enough level to take Bruce's class. But I am going to keep practicing and one day soon when I comfortable with it that will be the first class I would sign up for.

I am glad I got this discussion going and hope it continues. I am leaving BP because I was told my photography was not appropriate for the site...but for those interested in shooting fashion..take a chance! You'll never go back to shooting leaves!

Take care!

Leah

Leah you should get into photosig.com. It's a really nice site with a warming welcome to beauty/fashion. you're right though, this site does seem to lean towards that cutsie artsie type leaving fashion out in the cold. they say it's a family site but I guess the families here don't let their kids look at magazines or watch tv. I could really see a lot of your photos in old navy, or abercrombie&fitch or american eagle or something. you've got a good style. let us know if you get another gallery anywhere, i'd love to see your progress. btw what part of the country are you in?

Thanks guyz! I am in virginia Beach , Va. I agree. I had no idea that my photos were considered bad. I would like to suggest that BP be specific as to what can be posted and not posted. And if they plan on offering a fashion class- separate it from the other stuff so that people are free to post fashion images and critique them without getting beat up. As long as there is no nudity and the images are in-line with what is in a fashion magazine-thenn it should not be inappropriate.

This is just my thoughts on this.

I would stay on Better Photo. I feel it is the best site on the net to improve and learn about photography.

I would just revamp your site with the fashion images that are clothed.

You have some beautiful work (getting four awards) but Better Photo is a Family orintated site.

Than I would join either One Model Place or Musecube and you could place your glamour images on either of those sites.

Leah, I agree with Kerby. I think you should stick around. Whether you should remove any images is up to you and the powers that be at BP. I am old enough that I am neither shocked nor titilated by any of your images but I am impressed with the quality of your work. I have plans to shoot and post a few fashion images myself but they would be more along the lines of the fashion type images Kerby has of her beautiful child model. After all, good fashion work is less about the amount of skin shown and more about the pose, lighting, etc. and your work is excellent work, in my humble opinion.

the discussion thread is deleted but bruce's picture that show's nipples is still available on this family site.

kerry good point about the amount of skin showing. I agree very much so.

leah does great fashion work, but it's not great because her models are extremely sexy or the amount of skin she shows, her work is great because of her lighting, poses, compositions, backgrounds etc. it just so happens that she likes that whole sexy, partially revealing style. does it make her better of a fashion photog? no. she's just good. that's all I got to say.

Leah, your photographs have always made an impression on me. They are tastefully done, gorgeous, and artistic. I don't see how they could be innapropriate for any site. I think you do a great job photographing the lines and curves of a womans body without making it pornographic. I hope you stick around. :)

  Kerry,

Reminds me of something.

My little ten year old model is always wanting to take pictures of me.

I tell her some people belong in front of a camera (she definitely does) and some people belong behind the camera.

So your comment was funny to me.

I feel like a guy I know here who is a local talk radio host. He says he has a face for radio. Well, I am a photographer because I belong behind the camera, not in front of it.

Your little model is a beautiful child but, most importantly, she has a wonderful smile that says "I am a nice person". Without that, it wouldn't matter how pretty she is.
