Photography Question

Tonya Cozart

shooting without flash

Hi all!
I have a nikon D50, and have been playing around with it...first digital...and I am curious about the picture you see after taking it. Can you trust that how it looks in your panel is how it will look printed?
I am really working with tweaking my settings and so far I am having a fairly close match when I upload them, though they tend to be a little darker on the computer screen. I have not printed any yet..But if I take my cues off of each image I see, then I am finding I can shoot without flash even when the camera is flashing the little lightning sign for me to use the flash. Do you think it is right? IF I do use the flash when indicated, the the photo will be bright with overexposed highlights..what do any of you think?

I have the d70, and have found that even when the images look dark-ish on my screen they seem to print fine. That could be a result of my photofinisher's machine automatically tweaking things, but I'm happy with the results, so I don't question. I have also found that when the camera is telling me there isn't enough light, and I go ahead anyway because it looks good to me, the print has always turned out to be too soft--not pleasant, portrait-y looking soft--but really too soft.

also, when I use the nikon flash I am usually glad I did--no overexposure
