my flashgun

i have recently bought a canon eos 750 and have various lenses, I have also got myself a cobra auto 250 flashgun. the problem I have I that when the flashgun is connected to the camera the shutter speed slows right down. I use iso 200 film at the moment and intend to do most of my shooting with a HOYA HMC ZOOM & MACRO 75-260MM 1:4.5 62@ LENS. can you give me some advice please on how to use the flash and not over expose the film. I also have a Itorex 85A warm Filter 52mm can I use that too and how will it affect my pictures?

I don't know anything about the Cobra Auto 250. The EOS 750 has a minimum flash sync shutter speed of 1/125. When it senses a flash is being used it won't let you set a faster shutter speed. At faster shutter speeds the shutter isn't open on the entire film frame but instead forms a narrow slit that passes over it.

Flash exposure is controlled by a combination of the lens aperture and the flashgun's output. The "Auto" in the name of yours implies that it either,
(a) has a built in sensor that controls output, but you need to manually set the lens aperture to match its program; or
(b) is TTL and relies on the camera's meter to set the aperture and control the flash's output.

P.S. - http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/ is a terrific resource for just about all one should know about using flash with EOS cameras.
