Photography Question

Best camera to learn on?

Photography has been a very casual hobby of mine for a few years. I've always used an entry level Minolta SLR (Dynax 5 I think) and it's been great, but I haven't really learned anything because the camera does everything for me! Even if I go on fully manual mode, I am not sure if I am truly learning photography. So I was thinking about buying an old(er) manual camera (maybe a Pentax?) that I can learn with. So I am looking for suggestions on what type of camera I should buy and what I should look for. I take colour and a little B&W, often landscapes but also cityscapes and occasionally people. I am a student so price counts! And I often travel so weight is also a consideration. Thanks in advance!

you can put your camera on full manual and it will do the same thing as an old pentax. the camera doens't do anything for you on manual.

The older Pentax cameras are great tools to learn with. However, the cheapest thing to do is exactly what Justin said. Your Dynax 5 on manual will do exactly what that Pentax would. If you aren't learning anything using your camera in manual mode, it isn't the camera's fault. (I'll bet you are learning, You just don't realize it.) Get a few books on photography and practice. Everyone raves on Brian Peterson's Understanding Exposure. Get it and read it. One day you will make (not take, there is a difference) a really nice photo with the camera you have in manual mode and, guess what? The camera, which wasn't at fault when you weren't learning, won't be able to take credit for that photo. After all, it only TOOK the picture. You MADE it! You have the tools you need - a nice camera and a brain to learn with. With those two things, you can do it!
