How to shoot the Ocean How do I get the waves of the Ocean, to go smooth with exposure? Every time I try to slow down the exposure, it turns the entire picture white... does anyone have an idea how I can get the smooth look without losing the picture? Thanks. -Fawn

Make sure when you slow down the shutterspeed that you aren't doing it for too long, only like a 1/4 sec would be needed. Also make sure you are balancing the exposure settings, so if you slow down the shutter, you need to increase your DOF (ie large f stop number). If you are still blowing out your photos, make sure you have ISO 100 set, not 400 etc. I hope this helps.

Wave crests react much like waterfalls,...in that they are best photographed on overcast days or when they are not exposed to bright sun. During these conditions meter the crests of the waves and open 1/2 stop over that setting. As Natalie mentioned, a low ISO setting and small aperture will allow for a slow enough shutter to show motion.
