Photography Question

action shots of championship football game

Hi,
I have just moved into my Canon 20D from minolta film. I am shooting a WPIAL game at Heinz Field in Pgh. PA.
I have a 70-300mm (4.5-5.6)a prime 135, wide angle and standard 50mm.
I'm not concerned about the team shots but I am wondering if I will need something longer for action shots.
All input is greatly apprciated.

Depending on your position, are you on the sidelines or in the stands ? If you are on the sidelines you will do fine with your 70-300mm (lens speed maybe an issue if shooting under the lights) in sports mode or ISO 800 maybe 1600 with the 4.5-5.6 and relatively high shutter speed, if you are in the stands good luck. I shoot a lot of high school football under the lights (with a 70-200mm 2.8 and get excellent results), I envy you shooting at heinz field under the lights. Hope this helps

Ian

  Thanks for your response.
I will be on the side lines.
I plan on shooting at ISO 800. My first game is in the early afternoon so lighting won't be an issue, but that second game; well it will most likely will be under the lights. So, I'll use ISO 1600 with a fast shutter speed.
I am really excited but nervous too.
I hope I do justice to the kids' who have worked so hard to get there!
I just ordered a sigma 70-200mm f2.8 but it won't be here by game time.
Hopefully in a few months I will be able to afford the Canon 70-200 f2.8
Thanks for your input.
I 'll let you know how it goes.
Sue

Heres a sample from last fridays game under the lights. I used a canon 20d, 70-200mm 2.8 and speedlight. Settings were ISO 800and shutter speed 1/250
