Polarizing filter comparison

I would like to buy a polarizing filter, and have foud that when comparing what appear to be the same type of filter, (i.e. same size, circular, etc.) the prices range from $250 down to under $20. What's the difference? The cheapest one's were generic brands and I can see that maybe the quality is lacking, but do I really need to spend over $200??

There are differences in the glass (optical glass v. standard window glass), coatings (uncoated, coated, multicoated, hard-multicoated), differences in the quality of the filter material, whether the edges of the glass and filter material are sealed ("Kassemann"), and whether the mounting ring is plastic (avoid), aluminum (good) or brass (better).

Go for the best you can afford (B+W, Heliopan, etc.), but I think middle of the line Tiffen (good but uncoated) or Hoya multicoated are fine. Avoid the cheapest.
