How to shoot photos while it's snowing

Hi guys:

Here's a photo that I shot with my new Olympus Stylus 800, an all-weather camera. It was snowing when I took the picture and a below freezing.

The geese appear to have red eyes and there's snow specks all over the photo.

Any suggestions how to take a better photo while it's snowing so there are no red eyes and no snow specks on the photo?

Thanks.

Choo

Hi Choo, for the eyes of the geese, was the red eye reduction on? If not, try using that next time. It's definitely an easy thing to forget to sometimes use. Are you trying to photograph the movement of the snow? Or do you just not want the specks of the snow on the lens? If that's the case, maybe try a lens hood? I know it's used for lens glare, but it might ward off the snowflakes. Not sure, just a thought....

Hi Teresa and thanks for responding with suggestions. No, I didn't have the red eye reduction off. The problem is that it's a new camera and I haven't learned all its capabilities yet. It's a point and shoot so I can't use a lens hood on it, unlike my Canon digital rebel XT. I bought this Olympus camera for convenience, mostly so that I could have a camera on me at all times as my Canon is too bulky to lug along with me when I go walking or jogging. I also wanted a camera that I could use while it was snowing or raining or at the beach.

I was just trying to photograph the ducks and geese in the snow but I didn't want the snow specks on the photo. I guess it's caused by snow getting on the lens?

I'll look into the red eye reduction. I know it's capable of doing it. Just have to learn how.

Thanks once again, Teresa. I enjoyed your baby photos! They're charming.

Choo

  Don't use flash.

Right. The bright white dots of snow in the photo were lit by the flash. Turn the flash off and they will not be noticable. But then you have a problem in this low light scene with very long shutter speed or having to use much higher ISO setting (and attendant digital "noise").

Thanks, Greg and Jon! I'll try that this morning (no flash) as it's snowing like mad outside.

I'll tell you what happens but not using flash sounds like it'll work.
