TIFF Compression

Hey guys!
I was just giving some thought to how I should backup my post processed digital images. In respect to file types, TIFF seems to be a popular lossless option. My question is, are there any disadvantages regarding the use of LZW or ZIP compression when saving? Are these still losselss? They seem like a good option when backing up to HDD/DVD etc.

  ZIP compression is lossless.

By LZW, do mean choosing LZW compression as an option when saving the TIFF file? I think that compression may have some loss involved, but I'm not positive.

I just did a test, and found that compressing a 25MB uncompressed TIFF file into a ZIP file resulted in a 13MB ZIP file. Saving the same TIFF file as a compressed TIFF using LZW resulted in an 18MB file.

So ZIP compression will probably give you better compression ratios.

Chris, I checked on the LZW compression and you can compress and decompress any type of TIFF image of any bit depth using LZW, a lossless method. An average 2:1 compression ratio is achieved with LZW compression on typical photographic images. Lossless compression allows no loss of image quality. Lossy compression can yield a greater reduction in space, but the original image cannot be perfectly reconstructed from the compressed data.

Thanks guys. So it sounds like either of them are a good options to save some room on your HDD or DVD when backing up. Seeing as they are lossless there is no reason not to use them.
