Hi Lorraine,If You Shoot In Raw Format The Closed File Will Be Much Smaller In Size Around 7or8 MB That Depends On Which Camera You Have,You Will Get More Images On Your Card The Quality Is The Same,(Less The In Camera Processing) It Is Your (Digital Neg) You Can Do The Editing Either Way, It Would Be Best To Edit First And Then Put Them On Disk,That Way If The Disk Is For The Customer You Can Change The Format To Tiff Or Jpeg Or To A Format They Can Easily Read And Delete Them After Your Done With Them,Saving Only The Raw For Future Reprints:-)

thankyou for your reply. sorry I didnt make myself very clear. I would like to know how to save room on my computer. I take the pics in tif and store in tiff on my computer. which is filling my computer. I print off my pictures, but store them on computer for 12 months. If I download my pictures to a disc (thus freeing up some space on my computer) would I then be able to open them in photo shop to edit. As clients come back thoughout the year for more prints. If I had to edit before downloading (to a disc for saving) it would take me years.....

You can download your images 'as tif or whatever format you may be' to an external disk like a CD or a storage device (USB interface) to save your computer disk space, and you can always read the images back using a software like Photoshop or a Windows Explorer for viewing and editing.

When reading from a CD, you cannot write the images back the CD (unless you have a ReWritable CD), you may have to save the edited images to the computer disk for later printing.
USB storage devices are more flexible. You can read and write back and forth.

Now, back to your first part of your question, whether saving the images in tiff or jpg, etc.; saving in jpg format may save some space, but when you have 100's of image files, you will fill up your computer disk space soon or later. Besides, when you save images in jpg format, image quality may suffer in edit/save process cycle.
Therefore, downloading to an external disk will be the best solution to your computer disk space.

OK...Sorry to sound blonde.I have limited knowledge when it comes to computers... Once I have my saved pictures on my computer. I do my contact sheet, editing in photo shop only a couple of pictures. Then I want to be able to save the LOT on a cd. How do I then open the picture from my cd into photo shop and edit it at a later date.

  - In Photoshop, point to the "File" menu from the top menu bar, and click on the "Open" option.
- This will pop up a small window to select your directry and file.
- CD drive will be in the list. Locate the file you wish to edit and open.

Photoshop tuorial has this information as well. Take a look at the section "Learn the Basics" and go to "Getting Images into Photoshop".
