Digital Rebel/buy used with better lens or new...

Can't decide what to do. Buy a used Rebel 300 and get a better lens or a new Rebel 350. Anyone have any suggestions?

  Cheryl,
This is a tough one. A better lens is always a good idea, and will usually have a larger impact on your pictures than a camera body upgrade.

An important consideration, though, is how "used" is the used Rebel. The Rebel is not as tough and durable as higher models, and may show some wear with age. I take good care of mine, so it has aged well. I've had it over 2 years and have taken over 10,000 images, and it works as well as it did when I bought it.

If you're looking at buying a used Rebel from a reputable camera shop, where you can go in and see first-hand what condition it is in, then I would say go for the used Rebel and a better lens. Try to get them to throw in a professional cleaning.

I would be more hesitant to buy a used Rebel from someone on eBay, where you won't be able to see it in person, and probably won't have the option to return it if there is a problem.

Good luck,
Chris

I agree with Chris on this. If the choice was between an old F series Nikon and better glass and a new N series Nikon with cheap glass, I would pick the glass over the body any day. However, newer electronic cameras, be they film or those fonky digital things (Sorry, Chris. I had to get that dig in there. LOL) are more prone to failure than the old mechanical marvels. If the used body is in really good shape and you are buying from someone reputable (like B&H) then go with the used body and a better lens.

Good advice. The difference between a new working consumer DSLR and a used non-working DSLR can be as little as a three-foot drop into or onto something hard, moisture entry, bent CF pins, even plugging in the wrong voltage source. Where do these cameras go when they can't be repaired or repairs are too expensive?
