My first SLR digital camera

I am interested in buying my first digital camera and would really like an SLR type. What are some good options for not a ton of money. Also, I am a beginner who wants to learn on a digital with plenty of options.

Thanks

Wow, I'm surprised you haven't gotten a gazillion opinions already!

Well, my first question is why a DSLR instead of a high-end fixed lens camera? Some of the fixed-lens cameras allow for control of aperture and shutter speed 9and manual focus too) - like Panasonic Lumix FZ20 (or FZ30 nowadays). 5+ MP chip, 10-1 or higher zoom lens, etc. I only mention this option since while having replaceable lenses certainly offers flexibility, it also opens the door to dust getting inside the body.

That said, if you still want to go the DSLR route, and since you don't have a prior allegience to a given brand (the Nikon versus Canon thing gets to become a religion to some folks) I'd say that any of the current entry-level DSLRs are suitable. Nikon D50 or D70, Pentax *ist, Canon's Rebels, and Konika-Minolta's and Olympus' systems all offer a variety of lenses and other accessories that will allow you to grow a fuller system as you get interested in various types of shooting.

So, as it is with film cameras, the real differences are things you cannot see on a specification sheet. The only way to choose is by holding each one in your hands, and seeing how the camera balances and feels, if the controls are in places that you can work easily, if the viewfinder is bright and sharp enough for you, etc. That is the important differentiator - not whether one model has some obscure feature or name brand recognition.

So - go to a reputable store, and get a hold of the entry models (<$1000) from those manufacturers. You will no doubt be able to tell in a minute whether a given body is comfortable to nor to your liking.
