Photography Question

What camera to chose?

Hello everyone, I am really new at the technical side of cameras, but I started to enjoy taking pictures after our daughter came along... I currently use a hp r707 5.1megapixel. I would like to get a little more professional though to hopfully start a serious hobby, maybe more.. But I need help, hehe.. Can anyone suggest if maybe I should ditch this camera and maybe go with another? I looked on pcworld's website for top 10 advanced digital cameras, the runners up: Canon PowerShot G6 , Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom , Olympus EVolt E-300 , Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT . There where a couple more but this seemed to be top. If anyone could offer any insight I would greatly appreciate it!! Thank you so much, have a nice day!!! :)

A camera is very personal. Your 5 mega pixel camera will yield fine pictures. However, depending how serious you want to get would determine your next camera. I am not familiar with your HP camera and the speed of the processor. If there is a pause between taking a picture and seeing it on the rear screen ---then that could be a problem especially if you are taking pictures of car races. If the subject matter that you are shooting doesn't move then you could be satisfied with your equipment. I shoot with a Canon D20--8.2 mega pixels; at 5 frames a second up to 23 consecutive frames. Over the years I have always owned a Canon camera and have been very happy. When making your decision the first thing you have to do is determine whether you wand an SLR (single lens reflex), and change physical lenses or a point and shoot. Sticking to the top 10 camera mfg. is a good idea. Nikon,& Canon are probably the most advanced digital cameras today. As I said previously, go to the camera store and speak to the sales folks--I said real camera store. If you are NYC B& H is a great place with alot of options. Also, the biggest consideration is "how many dollars" you want to spend? There are alot of considerations and first determine how serious you really are...That is the best I can do for now. Please see my photos still under Free Gallery. I hope this helps.

Susan, I have been using the canon G6 for almost a year and can testify it is a great camera. In fact, I'll go on to say that it may be the "best" non-SLR digital. I have recently purchased ny first SLR, the Nikon D70. It's an awesome camera, but I still use the G6 from time to time.

You can add a telephoto converter as well as a wide angle converter for the G6. I use both and they really perform.

Please let me know if I can provide any more details. Good luck.

Thanks John, well I looked at the g6, nice camera. I will mostly be taking pictures of babys, Toddlers, kids, family, but not always close up.. Would this camera do for closeups as well as portrait style pics? Thanks!! I was also looking at the Canon EOS Digital Rebal 300d.. Here are my choices and prices, hehe

Canon g6- 474.96
Canon Digital Rebal 300d- 549.00
Nikon D50- 649.94
Olympus Evolt E300- 599.99

These are all kit prices, do you know ifmaybe I bought body only, then bought used lenses if I would save substantionally? Thanks!!!

Susan, you have listed four cameras--3 SLRs and one non-SLR. Pixel for pixel, you will most likely obtain, all other things being equal, higher quality photos from the SLR due to the larger sensor compared to the non-SLR. However, I still recommend the G6 for what you want to do. The G6 is excellent as a close-up camera. It has two macro functions. Take a look at my gallery http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/gallery.php?memberID=106513
and check "Abelia Grand..." and "Grandmother's Glasses". These were macro shots. Each abelia flower is about 1/4" across. (I have applied a drybrush watercolor effect in PS.)

Now, another bit of unsolicited advice. Be careful who you buy from. I would caution to not but from MP Superstore. Their tactics are less than straightforward. You can't go wrong with Adorama or B&H photo. Try Amazon as the vendors that market thru them are trusted sites (in my experience).

If you would like to consider a great deal on a G6 with accessories, contact me directly through my gallery.
John
