Photography Question

Jeff

Canon rebel questions. Getting ready to buy.

Hi y'all. I am excited that I have found the camera I will purchase shortly. The Canon Digital Rebel 300D. I have read a few review on the camera and everyone seems to rave about it. However, on one review there were a couple items that the writer didnt care for on the canon rebel:

1 Average burst mode performance (especially compared to EOS-10D)

2 Not a fan of the flash as AF-assist lamp system

I dont really know what these issues mean so I'm not sure if they are a factor in buying the camera or not. Could someone please give me some of there wisdom on this?

Also, where is the best place to purchase a camera such as this? Online? ebay? Camera store?

And finally, do I need to make sure it has a warranty?

I sure am learning a great deal from you guys on this forum. Thanks all!

  Jeff,
Depends on what you want to use the camera for. I've had the 300d for 2 years and mostly shoot portraits (hs senior and family) and didn't worry about those 2 items at all.
I love the camera and if you're new to the digital SLR world, I believe you will love it too.
As far as a place to buy one...I'm not sure B&H or Adorama have any 300d's left. You may as well get the 350d if you can spend a little extra, BUT make sure you check out the physical size of the 350d because it is, in my opinion, significantly smaller than the 300d.
Go to cnet.com, type in CAnon 350d and click on "check prices" to see the internet warehouses that have the best price. You can't go wrong with any 5-star rated business.
Good luck.

Thanks for the 350d tip Tony! I just checked out that camera and it's significantly better than the 300d and not much more price wise.

Everyone seems to like the 300d. Do any of you guys use the canon 350d? How do you like it?

Thanks!

I shoot with the Canon 10D & 20D. You can't go wrong with the 350D since Canon is a leader in digital photography. The Canon lenses are terrific so all you have to worry about is getting the best price. Make sure it comes with the Warranty.

Will just the factory warranty surfice or would it be wise to find some type of store warranty as well?

Also, I would probably like to get a kit. Following is one of the kits I was looking at. Does this look to be an acceptable kit with nothing necessary missing?

1. Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Body (Silver) - EOS 350D [qty 1]
2. Dane 1GB Compact Flash Memory Card [qty 1]
3. Special High Speed Compact Flash Card Reader [qty 1]
4. Sakar 800mAh Replacement Battery for Canon NB-2L [qty 1]
5. DigPro Deluxe SLR Holster Case - DP4000 [qty 1]
6. Sakar 3pc. Lens Cleaning Kit [qty 1]

Is it just given that digital cameras come with the USB plug-in to download pictures to your computer?

Hi Jeff, I hope this is not too late to try answering your question.

"1 Average burst mode performance (especially compared to EOS-10D)"

This is referring to how many picture the camera can take in a second and how many frame you can keep on shooting until the internal memory buffer of the camera is full (at this the camera cannot take any more picture until all the images in the buffer is transferred to the memory card). According to the spec, the 300D can take 2.5 fps and continuously up to 4 frames. If you are into sports or do continuous shooting often, this is obviously not enough power.

"2 Not a fan of the flash as AF-assist lamp system"

The design of this camera is to use the build-in flash to aid focusing in low light situation. Like many point-n-shoot type camera, the light emitted from the flash is very intimidating. Some Canon DSLRs have the option to turn off the in-camera focus assist and only use the external flash gun's infra-red beam.

Regarding the camera kit, I would get a camera with lens(es) that kind of kit. The one you mentioned above does not come with a lens but a bunch of junk. First, it is very likely that the camera is imported as a grey market and does not have USA warranty. It may even come with the instruction manual in other language. Second, I have never heard of Dane CF card or Sakar battery. Personally I think the CF card and the spare battery are important components to the digital camera and I will ensure they are of high quality. I recently bought a SanDisk Ultra II 1 G CF card for $84, which I am sure you can find it less expensive elsewhere. For battery I have heard a third party battery blows up during charging. There are even fake Canon batteries out there. Third, the camera should come with the USB wire to connect to the PC. So the card reader is not necessary.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply andy. Basically, I'm not sure the best place to buy the 350d. One of the places I found which appears to be a respectable company is Beach Camera.
www.beachcamera.com is where I saw the above kit. They also have USA warrenties.

If you guys could recommend a better place to buy a camera that would be super! Would it be better if I just bought it at best buy because I know they have good warrenties.

Reqarding kits, what exactly would be a good kit to have? Or to simplify, what other then the camera is a necessity to have? Battery, memory card, and decent lense are probably some.

Thanks for helping this newbie camera shop!

Yes Jeff, beware of the kit junk. He is right, most of it is grey market and they throw in the cheap junk to entice you

Buy the 350d from Beach, yes I bought mine there. It wasnt much more than on the internet kit prices. I researched for months before I bought it there. the reason was because they dont hide the facts or the specs from you. It has to say US when you check it out.

Other good choices are B & H photo, henrys, Abes of Maine, and Adorama, with Beach being about the cheapest. Also, go ahead and get their kit, it will come probably with the 18-55s lens, but it is actually pretty darn good for starters, and makes a nice wide lens. I bought a 28-105 next which I recommend highly for your walk around general lens. I say get their kit, because it comes from Canon with everything you need except for the card, which none come with it. and the man is correct also, get a 512 Sandisk Compactflash I or II either will work. You should get about 250 photos on the card. I have also a 256 Sandisk which gives me 139 photos on fine.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING THIS VALUABLE FROM AN EBAY SELLER

I agree about ebay. I have had considerable luck with less expensive camera gear in years past, however I lost several hundred dollars earlier this year to a con artist on ebay. It was a "buy it now" on a digital rebel and everything about it was a fraud. Never got the camera or the money back. So, I am very cautious about high ticket items. But, that said, I bought my Rebel XT locally. It was about $40 more than B&H, but with the extras the store threw in it was a good deal. I love B&H, I would buy from them anytime. Good luck.

Linda was the scammer by any chance Adamant? I lost my 800 for the buy it now rebel xt, but luckily I did get it back along with the other 12 at the time. and this guy had a perfect feedback and had over 1000 sales. You never know, and Ebay is very sporadic about who they protect and when.

So I bought it from Beach for 864.00

No, I don't think that was his name. Ebay offered "buyer protection" so I I went against my own judgment and sent $500, it was for the digital rebel (6.3) pluss accessories. Never got anything, nor any help from ebay. Live and learn!

Ok, you've got me convinced not to buy from ebay. I actually did think about buying there at first.

John, I didnt see the kit at Beach that has everything I need but the card. Perhaps I'm not looking in the right spot. Does the battery and charger also come in the kit you speak of? If you could paste the link here that would be fantastic.

Also, what do you guys think of best buy? I know alot of times they have a great in-store warranty on items.

Jeff, just go to Beach Camera on the web and search canon digital slr, and rebel xt.

They have different kit offerings at different times as they all do. Beach will let you see each kit by checking on the kit package options, specs whats included etc.

Yes the kit comes with the Camera and lens (depending on which kit) the strap, the body covers, lens covers, charger and batery, manuals and software, everything you need except the card. these kits are packed by Canon and sold complete that way, but the grey market does not. Beach has their toll free number and you can call with any questions.

Best Buy is OK and has some good prices, but are limited on which models sometimes, and they wont be able to answer your specific questions most of the time.. I think you are better off at one of the Camera Stores mentioned as that is their business.

And the only warranty you need is the Canon US that comes with your camera, but be sure its US, not grey market.

Jeff I just checked Beach, and right now they have the complete Rebel XT in black, with 18-55 lens for 764.00 after rebate whick is the best deal Ive ever seen on this kit. Mine was 864.00 from there but they didnt have the rebate going on. And yes, get black, the silver looks more like a cheaper point and shoot.

Wow, great price! Mine was higher, but I was able to get it locally and got a lot of extras, prints, classes, that sort of thing. I got the black too, it is so much cooler than the silver! Also, my husband is an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He made the point that the silver will reflect more in the sun, a problem if you plan to shoot any wildlife. I love the camera Jeff, you will too. Enjoy.

Yeah its a real honey alright. I loaded up afterwards with the st-2 wireless flash transmitter, wireless shutter trip, the vertical battery grip which is great for bad shoulders for vertical shooting, and a 28-105mm lens, a 580 ex flash, also a 550 ex flash, and finally the new 70-300mm usm is DO lens which by itself was 1175.00. So I went overboard, but will never need another camera

I agree that the kit lens is decent. I just took some family photos for a friend and enlarged to an 11 x 14 with beautiful results from MPIX. I am however a little jealous of John's gear! A little pricey right now for a minister's wife, but one day...

Dont worry Linda, Ill be picking this out of my ear for awhile. It was one of those "Gotta Have It" feelings that overtook me. Im doing 2 photo glamour shoots at thanksgiving for about 59.00 each for proofs. Let see, at that rate I should have this stuff paid for in the year 2008

if youre sure you want the XT. Try Costco, dell, Best Buy, heck, I think even Staples has em. Youre better off buying from a store if ya can I know the local Wal mart has em too! but only the silver body. its alot easier to return something to a physical store than it is a cyber store!
Craig-
Ps, I got mine from Amazon . com because I wanted the black body!
