I'd return it. You should get exactly what you ordered (the Olympus Zuiko 14mm-45mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ?). I have no idea what the 17.5-45 lens is (17-35?), but can be pretty sure it is a cheap substitute.

It is a zuiko lens 17.5-45mm 1:3.5-5.6,sold in the e500 se kit in europe.A friend of mine in the UK says over there it is preferred to the 14-45 mm zuiko lens that comes with a e500 in the states. whay do you think?

I see. Still, the 17.5-45 should cost less than the 14-45. If you're happy with it you should at least be refunded the difference.

It was $100 less than the kit with the 14-45mm.What would I gain or lose with the difference of 3.5mm overall?

There is a lot of difference in the wide angle provided by just 3.5mm. The 14mm gives 65.5° horizontal angle of view on the E-500, equivalent to a 28mm lens on a 35mm film camera. The 17.5mm lens gives a narrower 54.4° view, equivalent to a 35mm lens on a 35mm film camera.

They are both zuiko lenses,do you think the quality of the 17.5-45 is the same as the 14-45?

Reason I asked before I checkout the Pentax dSLR ist DL which has a 14mm lens on it and I did notice the wider angle of view. Olympus say I have two ways to do this. Bring it back where I got it (Costco) to exchange with the 14mm if they have it or exchange it with Olympus directly which takes longer. Thanks for the reference of the angle of view. TL
