which lens

I want to take action shots of kids playing football from about 10-15ft away with the canon 350d, can you suggest which lens would be the best for this job. Would I have to use a different lens if I were taking pictures inside and outside.

Lara, for action shots you usually want to use the fastest shutter speed possible (to freeze the motion) - that means getting the fastest lens you can buy (well, afford to buy would be a better phrase).

FOr 10-15 feet away, your normal lens might be sufficient in terms of focal length (the magnification measure) but to achieve faster shutter speeds you may want to get a faster lens. Without knowing what you've got, it's hard to recommend anything. And without knowing your budget, it's hard to recommend anything.

  Hi Bob
Thanks for the answer, my budget is about £2000 for the camera and lens, The camera I want is either canon 350d or 20d, the lens for these cameras I would guess I need a wide app 28mm 2.8f for what I want to achieve.I am very new to all this but have a fantastic bussiness idea and already have customers waiting. So I would be grateful for any info.
Best wishes
lara

If you're outside, it some bright lights (daytime) you might be able to get away with something around f/4.0-5.6. If you're indoors or will be shooting at night, you'll probably need something around f/2.8 because of the low light. That's a wider aperture.

I don't think a 28mm lens will do you well at all for anything sports related unless you're hoping to get an interesting perspective shot when the action gets VERY CLOSE.

What kind of shots are you looking for? Tight, close up shots of the action or shots including more than one or two players? If the players will always be 10-15 feet away in the daytime, you might be able to get away with Canon's EF 28-135 Image Stabilizer lens. The images stabilizer won't really help you as much for sports but it would be good if you wanted to do portrait work.

That's kind of a hard range to work with though. If you could scoot back a little bit you could get a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 if you were in pretty good lighting. I'm not sure how much it is in your currency but in US Dollars, it's $579 at bhphotovideo.com. The decreased noise in the 20D would help you out if you needed to shoot at higher ISOs but it all depends on your budget.

I think the big deciding factors are how close you want to get to the players even while they're further away, and daytime as opposed to nighttime/indoor. It doesn't seem like you would always be able to be 10-15 feet away so you would want something over 100mm. If you were shooting in anything other than daytime light, you'll probably want to get a lens that's f/2.8 or maybe faster although the 4.0 zoom lens might work as well if lighting is good enough and you can raise the ISO enough.

Hope this helps.
