Photography Question

Robert Harrison

contest Judging and uploading?

hey guys how are YOU doin? ok my question is this, wanted to ask, is it better to upload an image for a contest and build your gallery around the images that you have entered ? or simply upload your best images in general and then enter them from the gallery...?? also wanted to ask as far as the judging goes. Some photo's get more comments and feed back than others, does this better your chances for the contest?? .....been a member for round a month now...so I guess I am learning the ropes..!! thanks for your time guys and have a brilliant weekend...and don't forget to come into work to enter the contest..!!

addict------!!

ciao

  hey, Robert, I'm doing k...
...hmmm, good question...

Actually, most people are here for the contest, and therefore, they enter their best images (they think the photos have the best chance of winning) in the contest and build the gallery around them...

And there are some who build the gallery for thier friends and family and their clients to view. Some are all lined up with studio portrait photos.

So, it's you who have to answer your own question.... :D

As far as comments are concerned, the norm is that you will have to comment on others to receive comments. It's a give and take sort of thing...
And the comments are not really that much of feedback on your photo... they are just friendly exchange of words, unless you ask for serious critiquing.
I hope this makes sense.

...yep, go to the office and play betterphoto, Robert..., have a great one...

Robert you put in your best images into the contest.

I try and get each of the categories represented in my photo's. (ten categories). I managed to do that all except for the special effect one. I have not figured that category out yet.

As for commenting on an image most of time when you comment on someone picture they go to your gallery and look at your work. Than if they enjoy an image they comment on your picture.

I don't do that Kerby, I just find a category when one of my photos strikes me as xtra good. Do you go intentionally looking for a flower or a dog or a ferris wheel to shoot to fill the category list???

  Hi Bob,

No I don't normally go shoot for categories.

But I try and find images within what I have that fit the categories so I can get at least have a couple in each category.

I tend to take more images of people but if I alter them I can place some of them in DD or people.

When I traveling I can either put those in Travel and place or nature and landscape. I try to divide that up.

I been doing some Elements of Design lately which has been real different for me but I super pleased with what I am getting.

I just put an image where I don't have one if I can.

  Robert,
Definately upload only your best to this contest.
Here at BP, the competition for recognition is growing in leaps and bounds as each month goes by. As more and more people post here, the odds of getting a finalist nod or a win get progressively smaller.

As Nobi pointed out,...favorable comments are more of a "give and take" than a measure of professional prowess. Those who comment often are definately more likely get accolades of praise than those who don't.

Kerby,
It's funny that you've avoided the Special Effects category...(that's kind'a my favorite.)
As a film guy, I think it's fun and quite challenging to create special effect imagery in-camera.
S/E is of course open to digital shooters as well but I think that in this category, the judges tend to lean more favorably toward pre-conceived effects than post-processing.

(p.s...I like Elements of Design too.)

I just hit the reply button to respond to Kerby and up popped a comment from Bob C...and I didn't recall replying yet...a mind is a terrible thing to waste....:-)
But now I've changed course from what I was gonna say. Not having done film, it must be very hard to shoot for a "special effect" and not know (for sure) how it turned out until you get your prints/slides/whatever back . Even after you've done film forever (no offense)...it must be hard to look at the result a day later, be disappointed and not have the opportunity to redo it....or be elated at the result.....
I tend to ramble....
Bob

  Bob,
Sure, there are disapointments. There are times when we get our slides or prints back and swear a lot.

But there are also times when everything clicks,...and the vision we see on our light table or in our darkroom is exactly as our eyes and brain perceived it at the scene. Those moments are truly special and should be treasured.

OK - let's not turn this into a film vs. digital debate and get back to the questions at hand.
I upload a pic every day and enter it into the contest. But my gallery is already pretty much established. If I was just starting out I may enter some into my gallery to fill it up a bit and then I would still do a fresh upload and copy any comments I had. The reason for that is people tend to look at current contest entries (like in the last day or so). What happens when you enter a pic in the contest that was entered the week before in your gallery - it gets put into the contest entries by date - and no one really notices it.
Commenting does increase the more you do it. So if you have time to spend - look through the current contest entries and tell people when you like their pic. Some may even write you back or put you on their favorites list.
I understand what Kerby is saying about trying to enter all the contest categories. When I first started out (2 years ago now), I really never hit more than 3 or 4 categories each month (animals, flowers, details and macro etc.) But another BP friend said it was their goal to hit all the categories one month and I thought that was a great idea because it makes you step out of your box and try something different. I finally did it this summer, and do try to hit at least 8 or 9 of the categories every month - just to keep me stretching and trying new things.
As for the judging and whether the number of comments you get affects it at all - the answer is no! Ever month there are finalists who never got a comment (when I had time it was my goal to go through all the finalists and make sure everyone had at least one comment).
Welcome aboard Robert! Have a great weekend!

No worries Bob - I didn't mean you - but there are so many threads already debating the issue I didn't want this one to turn into another one.
As for the other Bob - there are several in camera special effects you can do with a digital camera - my beef is that BP has been awarding finalists and wins in the SE category to pics that obviously belonged in Digital Darkroom, including this last month. Plus both categories have much less entries than the others. So winning a finalist in a category with 4,000 entries compared to one with 500 entries just doesn't seem like they should be equal... But never mind - we don't want to get into that debate either.
Hope you're all shooting something fun today!

Just an observation, Diane...but I've noticed that some finalist categories have less than others. Maybe this is the judges way of trying to "equal" the selection of finalists.

Bob I take my pictures digital.

The Special Effects category I really do not understand it.

I have put images into the rest of them and try and get some in each category each month.

Robert I put one image a day in and put the best I have in.

I was not going to put two people images in a row in the contest but I took this last night (Pretzel and a Pepsi) I just had to.

FUNNY is the only thing I can say about it. I guess you just go with what you feel is the very best you have.

Kerby

Sherry - yes there are less finalists - but the same number of 2nd place and 1st place winners in all the categories.
Kerby - pretzel and a pepsi is just hilarious!
That girl is flexible!

I think most of us try to fit in as many categories as we can, so as not to "shoot yourself in the foot" so to speak..I try to not put in too many similar shots in the same category in the same month. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not. I can't find a single people or flower shot for this month...so far. LOL
