Photography Question

Jeff

Good books to start with?

Good day. I'm new to the forum and I'm here because I'm interested on starting a career in photography. I have been searching for a career where I can use my creativity for a long time and I feel that photography could be it.

I dont know the technical side of photography but I do know that I love to take pictures and that I'm good at it.

I have no clue where to start or what direction I would like to go with photography. I saw a thread saying to take the online course here but cash is pretty tight for me now. So perhaps I should start with some books. Do you guys have any recommendations on books I can start reading?

I am looking forward to becoming a regular on this forum:)

  Hi, Jeff, and welcome!
BP is the only site I know, and the only place I've bought books and taken classes.
I would highly recommend Bryan Peterson's "Learning to See Creatively".

I would start with Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure". He's amazing, and explains the technical side so well!

Jeff- there is so much info out there. And it depends on what aspect you want to learn first. Learn the technical side. Master your skills. Go to the bookstore and find a basic book on how to use your camera. If you are digital, there are lots of books on digital SLRS. Very helpful. I am currently reading a great book on the business aspect of photography. It's Vik Orenstein's "Photographer's Market Guide to Building Your Photography Business" It's great for all types of photographers. It talks about studio work, commercial, portrait, fashion, etc. And it gives a lot of insight into what's involved in making this your career. You will find that having a strong business knowledge is key to being successful in this industry.
Good luck and happy shooting!

I have read these books and you will learn alot from them. I have read many books on photographic topics and the most important and informative, I think, is the Basic Photography Series by Ansel Adams which include a series of three, The Camera, The Negative, and The Print. These will give as comprehensive a background in photographic techniques and practices as you could possibly ask for.

Thanks for the replies! Has anyone seen the Digital Photography DVD? Looks like it might be one worth checking out.
