editing or cutting an object from an image I am the website administrator for a Christian Country music group called Red Oak. We take our own pictures and create at times, our own clipart. My question is, could you please turn me on to a program that would allow me to cut out an image from a picture. For example, if I have a picture of the guitar player with a lot of stuff in the background, is there a way that I can outline, just him, and save that, with no frame or anything else. I just don't want to crop a square or rectangular picture. And, can I do the same thing to clip-art that I have created without having a white background and square frame. I would like to create some humorous pictures, like some of the hoaxes we see daily on the internet, people e-mail us.

Photoshop has some plugins to help you mask out unwanted parts from your images. I found one - Fluid Mask. If you do a search on google for "Photoshop plug-in mask" you'll see it. It's not cheap - $239, but may be well worth it. You can do it by hand in Photoshop by using the pen tool and outlining your subject (there's more steps, but I won't get into it if you're not interested), but it will take a long time, and for fine details like stray hairs, it's difficult and time consuming. These plug-ins are usually much easier.

Terry, Not sure what image editing program you are using, but I think you will soon see, Adobe Photo Shop is generally the defacto program. Many people will tell you the learning curve is steep, and while partly true, concentrating on masking and compositing is well worth the effort for good results. 2) Whenever I know I will be cutting out an object, I will shoot that object against a very high contrast background, as this makes selecting the object sooooo much easier. Is there a magic bullet for what you seek? In a word; No! Sorry. Let us know what program you are using. There are easy ways that are not really too elegant, nor all that professional looking, and there are the "other" ways that take some dedication and time to learn. The only tip I can give you if you choose to embark on image editing is "baby steps."

photoshop and a steady hand. magnetic lasso works well if there isnt too many objest that appear in the background but look as if they are comming out of your subject. also you can blow up the image to 200 times its size and just erase what you dont want, then / or there is free hand lasso.. soo many options, so much learning but worth it. and you can also sign up for one of the photoshop classes here.
