Lulu publishing

Anyone ever hear of Lulu publishing? I saw their website and it looks a little too good to be true. They publish all sorts of books, calendars, etc. and don't charge the developer (you), only the buyer. Has anyone ever used them or know of their reputation? I'd like to create good quality calendars for my family/friends, but have only found the low quality kind that can be printed at most discount/chain photo stores.

  I'd never heard of them...

http://www.lulu.com/

It does seem too good to be true.
I'd read the member agreement very carefully - and try to e-mail some of the people who use them to get their opinion.

I've printed my own calendars at Shutterfly and very much like their quality.

www.shutterfly.com

They just had a sale - where the first was regular price and all others were half price... I bought 11 in all! They have sales often so sign up and get their e-mails!

I also made my holiday cards there.

I checked out the site, and it looks very interesting. They are sort of a combination of the Mypublisher.com idea with the eBay model. They don't charge you to put items up on their site, they make their money from printing charges and royalty fees.

Here's a quick summary of what I learned:

When you publish content on the site, they tell you how much it will cost to have it printed. Then you decide how much royalty you want to make on each sale, and they add 25% of that as their fee. So if you decide you want to make $1.00 royalty on an item, they will add 25 cents to that, and the total markup over the printing price will be $1.25. They handle the transactions, and pay you royalties on a quarterly basis.

They have lots of links on their site to copyright laws, so it looks like they try hard to protect copyrights.

It looks like a really neat idea for certain applications. There's no guarantee you'll make a fortune, but then again, there never is.

I haven't seen any of their products, so I don't know what the quality would be. My guess is if the quality is not there, they wouldn't stay in business for long.

I don't see anything sinister going on here. They're not making any huge promises, or telling you that you won a contest, now you need to buy your prize. ;-)

Thanks Chris and Diane! I will also look into the sites you both recommended. I'm going for the glossy, traditional calendar look so hopefully I can find something. Maybe i'll get one calendar printed from each company and do a comparison! I'll post again if I do this.

Amy
