Photography Question

Photo Labs

I have been taking pictures for about a year and a half, and I am currently starting my own buisness from home. I was just curious about how you got your pictures to the online labs. I have also looked at online photo labs and I am going to dry ProLab express. After editing your photos do you save it to a disc and mail it, or do you upload from your computer? Just curious, if any one has feedback that would be great! Thanks again!

With most labs you upload pictures directly to the website. I dont know about other labs but on Mpix you can request CD mailers, mail a disc and have them do the uploading. It took about a week when I did it, but my computer is slow and I don't think I could have uploaded all the pics I wanted very easily. It's free too, so if you dont mind the wait it might be worth trying.

Thanks Stephanie, I am new to all of this so I am just trying to get all of the basics down, and hopefully have a succesfull buisness!! Do you currently use MPix with your photography? I have some friends whom I am taking a family picture for and they want a big picture for their family room so I want a processing company with high quality printing, and since I am just starting out Im trying to figure out which printing company will be the best. Thanks again, if you have any more suggestions, I would love to hear them.

yes I have gotten prints from mpix and I was very happy with them. you can order any size from wallet to poster, and you can get some specialty items from them (trading cards, buttons, etc.), you can even order prints framed and ready to hang on the wall. thier turn around time is fantastic, I got my prints 3 days after I placed my order. as for quality, my prints turned out fine, but I havent gotten any bigger than 8x10, and quality of prints is greatly determined by the quality of your camera. there are lots of people on this sight who love mpix, you might try searching the threads and see what they've said.

I'm fairly new to online labs too (last two years) and was just turned on to Mpix a couple months ago. IF you have access to a friends faster upload, it's worth it (my dial up is way too slow). Mpix is great and has been better quality than a lab in another state that I just dropped. Mpix has super fast turn around, and Steph's advice about the mailers would be great. I'll have to check into those mailers. I have checked into ProLab express but never got prints from them. I'm also trying out Nichols Labs in Salt Lake City. Met Mr. Nichol at a photography convention in Denver and his print options/prices looked right up my alley. I shoot about 20-30 hs seniors and families a year (small time). I'll let you know how Nichols Lab works out.
Good luck.

Tony- ive never done senior portraits, only my cousins wedding pictures, and ive never gotten wallets. I don't know about a studio logo, but if you just, mean some way to keep the prints from being professionally enlarged/copied, all the prints say DO NOT COPY on the back.

  Tony,
I have a very fast dialup, I use dsl and it is very fast, but I have never used it to send pictures. I use the Fuji S7000 and it takes awesome pictures, I have never printed anything bigger than an 8x10. Do either one of you guys use digital backgrounds? I just recieved all of mine with my green screen, and I am trying to learn the software, because most of my pictures I have taken have been outside shots on my families ranch. I am trying to cut the picture and put it on the digital background but I am having problems with it. Do either one of you use Paint Shop Pro 9?
It has some really neat graphics and things to do with pictures but I am having a hard time learning it. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks!!!

Thank you all for responding, this is my first day using betterphoto.com, and you all are so wonderful with your responses. I just ordered Paint Shop Pro for dummies, and I am hoping that it will shed some light on the software for me. Computers dont like me much, so I have a feeling it is going to take some time to learn everything. Stephanie, if you can think of the name of the book you use I would love to see if it would help me out at all. Thanks again!

Camille

the book is actually the reference guide from Jasc, just like the book that comes with the software, but better, with more info.

Thanks, I will have to check into the book, I did not get the guide from Jasc, because my husband bought the software for me on ebay, and to make shipping less expensive all they sent was the disc.
