Running field workshops in the USA

I would like to start organizing, running and hosting my own field workshops in various National Parks in the USA. I do not live in the US nor am I a US citizen. What permits licences, work visas, liability insurance and other legal issues do I need to deal with?

Mike – I am not an expert on your question; however, since I am currently traveling to various National Parks in order to complete an assignment (writing, not primarily photography) I can offer you some insights. First, you need to know that there are many such programs currently in operation. Some are run by well-known pros, well known magazines and others who have a good track record in these type things. Therefore, before doing anything else, I would strongly suggest that you take a hard look at what is currently being offered by others and see how/if you can make your program different. If it is simply a duplicate of what is currently being offered it might be difficult to get customers.

Yes, you need a permit from the National Park Service (Department of Interior – Department of Agriculture). You will also need a permit from each park that your plan to tour. This is different (and more expensive) from the park pass that anyone needs to visit the parks. As far as work visas are involved, I have no real knowledge of this; however, you can probably find this info on the Department of State website. And, yes, if you are transporting customers you will need liability insurance. I believe, but am not 100% certain, that this insurance will have to be obtained from a US company.

Finally, have you visited any of the parks you hope to include in your tours? After spending the past couple of years visiting various parks I can tell you that there is a great deal to know and the only way to really know what you need to know is to visit the parks and plan on spending time there. I have spent much of my life touring Yellowstone National Park (I grew up nearby) and even now, after all this time, there are parts of the park I do not know. Every time I visit I find something new and wonderful – but, it takes time to know the parks well enough to help anyone else see the opportunities for image making. Right now I am working on some stories about Glacier National Park. I also know this park fairly well, but, again, I find something new every time. Bottom line: You need to do your homework; visit the parks and spend time there; study what is currently being done and decide what you can offer that is better. Good luck!

Irene
