Photography Question

Tammy L. Odell

Which size proofs to offer? 4x6 or 4x5??

I was just wondering what size proofs is best to give clients? I have always given 4x6, but wondered if 4x5 would be better. I realized when enlarging to 8x10 there is hardly no cropping. That way clients will have a better idea just how their enlargments will look, except for the 5x7's, most are close to the 4x5 size crop. What do most of you with customers use?

NO...I know that there is quite a bit of cropping from a 4x6 to an 8x10. I meant from a 4x5 to an 8x10.

Hi again Tammy ... another reason that I usually offer 4x5 if some want the folio books to put the prints in . .. they do make those for 4 x 6 but there are alot less choices in doing so. This is a great add on for my seniors. I also think for the most part 4 x 5 is what most think of in terms of proof but I don't think there is any hard fast rule .. . but if you give 4 x 5 it makes it harder or them to copy them to a 4 x 6 but easier to do for an 8 x 10 . ..As I mentioned before alot of times I get in really close and so when cropped some of the picture is lost(more than I want sometimes) so I want them to see exactly what they will get with an 8 x 10 so they aren't surprised or disappointed when it arrives. . .most do not understand the aspect ratio of things so it's hard to explain to them.

Thanks Michelle, where is the best place to buy the folios cheap, cheap?! I am really thinking of doing the 4x5's when I run out of the proof books I use now. I am thinking of offering less proofs and only giving them with a print purchase. Most of my clients have been very good about ordering alot of prints, but I have had a couple that I think are copying them, even though they are copyrighted. Just wondered what everyone's thought's were about the 4x5 size. Thanks for your input!!!

Hi Laura. .. I use Albumsinc.com for my ordering . . they have about everything including wallet boxes the little folders that dress up the 4x5's or larger sizes. .. they also have the plastic bags to put the photos in as well as delivery type bags. . . I"ve used them 3 or 4 times and they are good. I'm not sure how they compare with price though . .. the folios are around $10-$11 I think plus shipping .. .I try to order a big order to save on shipping. .

I also got a catalog from Michel Company . . . the prices look comparable but I haven't really looked deep at the catalog . . . they also have a website michelcompany.com

Both have links on their websites to request catalogs.

One of the photographers around here makes his own proof book 8.5x11 I think and it's on a paper type stuff and bound together ..they are really nice and then he offers the proof book free if they order so much. It has the image number on it and all the necessary information inthe back as far as prices, reordering, copyright info, order forms, etc. I think it makes it harder for them to copy the images like that without tearing up the book. the images in the book are 4 to a page in a 4x5 aspect ratio I think but they may be a bit smaller to fit 4 on the page plus the other image info!
