Photography Question

Lisa Carpenter

I am SOOO frustrated!

Ok, this seems to be a problem that I cannot solve. I have a Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop with a 17" ultra sharp display. I spent a pretty penny on this about 11 months ago just for use with my photography. I really need to make sure my monitor is calibrated so that I get consistently good prints. BUT, I am hearing that laptop screens cannot really be calibrated all that well, even if I purchase software to help calibrate...does anyone know anything about this???????? I am more than frustrated.

  Hi Lisa...

I also have a Dell Inspiron, and have heard all the slams to laptops regarding calibration...I just use the Adobe Gamma to calibrate, and it works more than adequately. If I were to offer a tip, I would tell you that when you do calibrate, you need to take it in a room with NO lighting in it, that way you will be able to see without any varying color temperatures to distract your vision. I have had no problems with the calibration of my laptop--I also just got a new printer, and I am thrilled with the results....just my two cents...:o)

So Mikki, you are saying that you calibrate yours in the total darkness? I do love my Inspiron and would hate to know that it cannot work great for photography...thanks so much

Oh, Mikki, the other thing, how do you adjust contrast on your inspiron?

  Hi Lisa,

I love my laptop, too, even though it is a couple of years old now, it is still blazing fast with a 3.06GHz processor and 1 gig of ram...I process RAW images with Elements 3.0 and have no trouble with the 'crawls' (...that's when you hit an "Apply" button and sit back and relax with a cup of joe to watch the progress bar slowly inch to completion...:o)

Yes, I calibrate in complete darkness--I used to do it on battery power, but if you do that, your brightness will be off, as the monitor runs dimmer on battery power, so make sure you keep it on AC...the contrast is part of the steps of calibration. Just follow the directions as the wizard walks you through, then save your new monitor profile under a new name--it should be the default setting automatically...
