How to calibrate my monitor

I need to calibrate my monitor, but I have no idea how. When I print my photos at home to my printer they look COMPLETELY different than on my monitor...they turn out very dark. Can anyone describe for me how this is done or point me to some references? I know there is software available, but I'm not sure what to get. I am an amateur and am just learning.

you can turn down the brightness or gamma adjustment on the monitor till it matches your print...

If you're using a PC [Windows,] go to Control Panel > Display. Check to see if you have Alpha Gamma, a program loaded as part of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Click on the icon and follow the instuctions.

This is cheaper than buying Spyder or another of the expensive systems. It might not meet the requirements of the most demanding pro or a seminar leader like Will Crocker, but it'll work just fine for the majority of us.

I'm going to look for this Alpha Gamma option when I get home... however, what if I like my current laptop screen's display? ie, my "Detail Rose Window" pic (see gallery) looks JUST how I want it to when viewed on my laptop, but looks way too dark on a CRT display (at the office, trying several CRTs.) I recently had that pic printed, and it came back definitely not as "light" in the shadows as my (ideal) laptop display, and was barely less dark than the way-too-dark CRT display!---so I'd want the print shop to duplicate more of what I see on my laptop.
Does this implay I should deliberately adjust my laptop monitor to look like the too-dark print I got, then go into PS and try to edit the file to appear like my "desirable" laptop monitor appearance? (I hope not!) Or, is there a way to force the printing side of things into line with the monitor? Thanks for any input!
