Attention Sony owners

I received the following from Murry Grigsby and thought I'd pass it on to the other Sony owners in case of problems.Sony UK has finally issued an advisory notice about a problem with the CCDs used in its digital cameras, camcorders and PDA Clies. Sony supplies CCDs for many other major manufacturers who have already issued announcements about their cameras, but despite the date on this notice, it has only come to light today. The affected Sony cameras were manufactured between October 2002 and March 2004 and will experience problems displaying the image, where it may appear distorted or not at all. Digital cameras affected include the F717, 11 P-series cameras, the U10, U20, U30 and waterproof U60, as well as the five megapixel DSC-V1. Sony will, of course, repair all cameras experiencing this problem free of charge.

Press Release:

Notice to Owners of Sony Digital Still Camera
October 3, 2005 - It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of Sony Digital Still Cameras that incorporate an image sensor device, CCD Chip, manufactured from October 2002 through March 2004 may exhibit the following condition:

I just noticed there was supposed to be a number to call if you have problems that isn't there, so I'm going back to Murry and ask him to look it up again and hopefully I can post the number to call.

The only number listed is in the UK, so maybe it just affects the European market, but here's the number for what it's worth...UK 08705 143480

Wow Carolyn, this has me a little worried now. I haven't had any problems with mine (F717) but I'm just imagining being on a wedding shoot and having something like this happen. Its a shame we have to wait for something to happen to get it repaired, it could be a real problem if it happens during an important shoot. Thank you so much for thinking about the rest of us and getting the word out.

Glad I still bring my film cameras as back up.

Well, good luck to all of you who have one of these cameras. I'm glad I got the F828, and hopfully it's just those cameras listed.

I hope it never happens to any of us, but if it does, we'll at least know what's going on.
Brendan, how do you like your F828? I'm thinking that may be my next one.

  Carolyn,
I really like my F828, the only thing that I don't like is that it's not a DSLR. Also, I don't know if you know but sony is comming out with a new one, the DSC-R1. It's about 1000$(100$ more than the F828). You can check it out here:http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=DSCR1&Dept=cameras&CategoryName=dcc_DIDigitalCameras_CybershotProDigitalCameras
One drawback that I've noticed about this camera is that it has a 5x optical zoom and the F828 has a 7x.
If you have any other questions about the F828, feel free to email me.

  Also Carolyn,
I just started looking at the R1, and it does have some advantage's F828. In aperature the F828's smallest is f/8 the R1's is f/16. The R1 also has up to a 3min bulb and the F828 slowest is 30sec. The R1 has a B&W feature, but doesn't have the Negative art. In ISO, the F828's highest is 800, and the R1's is 3200, but I don't know how good it is. The R1 doesn't have a movie mode though. It's not something that I bought the camera for, but it's nice to have every once in a while. The R1, also doesn't have the F828's Super HAD CCD 4color sensor(RGBE), it just has a CMOS RGB.

The reason I'm looking at the 829 instead of the R1 is that all my filters and conversion lenses will fit it as it has 58mm size as opposed to the R1's 67, I think. Also I couldn't care less about a DSLR..Too steep a learning curve for me, since I'm almost 65 and hate studying. LOL. I do like the black and white option though. My old Mavica had black and white and I miss it terribly on the 717.

Well about B&W, they say that it's better to shoot in color, then convert it to B&W in PS. For some reason it's supposed to turn out better.

It does turn out as good, but just adds an extra step or two.

I don't know, that's just what I've heard. But the F828 does have a Sepia option.

Mine does, too. I'm not a sepia fan. They always look washed out, which is, I guess, the point. LOL
