Photography Question

Nikon Coolpix 990 and SB-28

Although I was assured they would be perfect mates, I've not been able to figure out which Group of the ones identified for the Nikon SB-28 strobe does my Nikon 990 Coolpix belong to.

I bought the strobe because I was assured they would be a perfect match, but the camera isn't even listed in the SB-28's manual.

Any help you can give me on best match settings would be incredibly helpful and MUCH appreciated.

Thanks!

  Ruben,

I just went through the same thing!
I don't know if you will see this since it was from 6/8 but here goes.

The SB-28 will work in TTL mode. The Camera does not support TTL (Thru The Lens) flash control but it does have a sensor just out side the lens on the camera. It will control the flash power just as if it (990) was a TTL capable camera. When I did the research, I was told that the Nikon 990 is to be considered in Group I or II in the manual. Just follow the Flash instructions as if the 990 was listed there.

You can, as I am sure you have seen, control the internal flash and use the flashes in combinations. You can really get some neat resultls. What I did is set the flash to different settings/positions and took the same picture various times. Try to get a shot that will have objects that cast shadows (eg. a lamp or shelves) and you will see the effects.

Incidently, it will also control the flash when in Auto mode on the flash but TTL gives you more options as far as the flash is concerned.

Hope this helps if you have not already figured this out on your own.

I have (sort of) figured this out by myself, but appreciate your input.

Here's what I've done and obtained some great results: I leave the strobe on automatic (A) and it is VERY forgiving. The camera, for situations that do not require fighting other light sources -- mostly interiors -- I leave on automatic also. Great shots.

For shots that require balancing outside light with the strobe -- I shoot mostly real estate ($$$) -- I leave the strobe on automatic and set the 990's menu to speedlight, manual and matrix metering. Works like a charm.

I love this set up, but it took a while to figure out. Shame on Nikon for putting us through this nonsense when a few more words IN EITHER manual would have solved the problem of mating.

Thanks, Luis. Good shooting.

Ruben
