I wish I had a definative and technical answer for what causes this to occur but it happens quite often with sharp lines on a diagonal...(45 degrees is the worst). I've noticed the same thing happening with my scanned slides. The lines are sharp and clear on the original but become jagged when I scan them and re-size for web display.

Thanks for your thoughts Bob. Interesting that it happens to scanned images as well. I looked a bit further and it seems it has to do with the mathematics of resizing an image. A 45degree line needs to go say across 4 and down 4 pixels. If you reduce by 50% this becomes 2 and 2 and all is OK but if your zoom out is say 33% the maths doesn't work -- so jagged! I just wonder why it isn't evident more often. BTW the birds on your site are super smooth - you must have "filed" the others!! Thanks again.
