Photography Question

What kind of lighting should we buy?

We have just purchased a new olympus E-10 digital camera to do product shots for our catalog. Our products are relatively small. What type of lighting do you recommend. I have been told that a monolight would be enough. Is this true or would another system give us a better result?

  Christian,
Depending on what your product is, its reflectivity (shiny surfaces, etc.) and how you want to portray it, the lighting setup can become sophisticated. This can vary from a couple of lights in softboxes or reflectors on a small stage (miniature version of a studio) to tents and light tables used with lighting set up around the tent (with a small opening for the camera lens.

Some books on this subject:
a. "Professional Photographic Illustration Techniques" Kodak Publication O-16
b. "New Product Shots" by Alex Larg and Jane Wood
(part of the Rotovision series on lighting)
c. "Small Scale Photography" by Charles Lewton-Brain

I suggest looking at the Kodak publication first.

For small articles, so-called light tents turn out to be useful. The atricle(s) are placed inside the tent, the light source is placed outside, and the tent has a small hole for the camera. This ensures diffuse light, and refelexions should not be a problem.
