Lighting Subject Low to the floor

I am having a really hard time lighting subjects that are sitting down on the floor. I have a Canon 20D and three studio lights from Alien Bees. One is a B800 and the other two are B400's. I have a large, maybe 3 1/2 foot, soft box and two umbrellas. When I prop someone up on a chair, trunk or bench the light seems ok, but down on the floor always look flat and too shadowy. This is the case even when I move my lights down. My smallest light stand will allow me to bring the softbox down to one foot above the floor. any tips would be greatly appreciated.
