Diffusion panels..really that good? I have been reading how diffusion panels that stand 6-7 feet tall are an excellent light source that can be changed by the distance of the strobe from the panel...anyone have any knowledge of these panels and thoughts?

Yes. They were popularized a couple of decades ago by Dean Collins, who recently passed away. Do a Google, and read everything you can about the man, and purchase as many of his How-to videos and books as you can afford. You'll be blown away by his imagery using these large, easy-to-use diffusion panels. Michael H. Cothran www.mhcphoto.net

Lisa, Let me expand just a little on the principles of diffusion panels: Modern softboxes are actually derivatives of the original diffusion panels, and are more versatile since they can be placed on a light stand or boom, and held at angle to the subject. Diffusion panels are made to pretty much just stand upright. Placing the panel as close to the subject as possible provides light quality of the highest order. The distance from the panel back to the flash head determines how much of a "hot spot" you will have on the panel. Placing the head close to the panel will generate a strong hot spot, and more powerful light, while moving the flash head back will begin to even out the lighting on the panel, while light power will decrease due to the distance of the actual head from the subject. I sent you an e-mail. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You really have gotten to know your stuff and I think it is great that you share that knowledge. I am learning day by day and it's amazing what I still have to learn. Lisa

North window, light coming thru a translucent curtain, softboxes, bouncing off a ceiling or wall, it all works the same way.
