Memory card problem

Hi all, I photographed two weddings on the weekend, both went really well. Although I found an issue with my memory cards:

I noticed that 2 of my memory cards weren't allowing me to take as many photos as the other two cards, ie usually 512 card on high res will give me 130 photos, I was only getting 79 photos.

Second, I took some photos of the certificate and the rings etc, GONE!!! no where to be seen, I can't find them on either card that I used and I have triple checked! Thank God it is a photo I can recreate.

Third, I took a photo of the Bride, Groom and their son, checked exposure etc. Son and Groom are perfectly exposed. Bride is so washed out and lacks contrast it is like she isn't part of the photo - very bizarre. I have had a fiddle in layers etc and fixed it (sort of, although best in B&W) but I just can't understand why the bride would look so bad. I will post a pic tomorrow and show you. I am thinking maybe there was some fog or water on the lense (as it was spitting) But if anyone has any answers to these 3 wierd ones. I would much appreciate it.

Lexar Professional Compact Flash 80X had a recall. My Canon 20D was acting like you describe until I exchanged the card. I don't suppose you are using Lexar but this may lead you in the right direction.

Gary.

I have 2 lexar ones and the other 2 I can't remember, maybe that is what it is. Wonder if I can send them back?

  Hi Natalie
My first impusle was ask if you ever formatted your cards? Sometimes, I have found, if you only delete your shots from your card, it doesnt start from the beginning of the card. Formatting totally clears the card.
Hope that helps.
Charlene

I was thinking of that this morning, I will format them when I get home. What about this missing images? That is just so strange...

I'm not real sure about the missing pictures, but it could be the not formatting, and starting at the very first part of the card. I've had that problem too. One minute they are there and can be seen in the camera, but won't download.
Must be those digital ghosts!!!!

  Hello Natalie,
I'll try to respond to your question on number of images on a card and the exposure prob.

All images do NOT produce the identical file size from shot to shot.

Experiment: Shoot a white or black wall. Then go shoot perhaps something with a lot of various colors and structure.
You'll see the latter is a larger file size.
A memory card via the sensor records images in RGB amoungst other things. A simple black wall does not ask the sensor to record much. Perhaps this is some of what you are seeing.

2) I will assume the bride was wearing white? If so, how did you meter the scene?
If the two other people were not wearing white, and it was a tight shot, your meter probably exposed for the dominant "darker" colors, thereby over-exposing the bride.

Now had you metered for the white bridal gown, the other two people would have been underexposed. A somewhat difficult exposure to calculate.
If you are shooting digital (you didn't say) then you don't have the exposure latitude you would have compared to film.
One remedy I use with digital when faced with a exposure prob like this is to 1) Tripod mount...2) Shoot 2 shots, one a stop under and one over in rapid succession..3 shots is even better..One plus, one minus, one as the meter dictates. Then; layer the 2 or 3 shots and either reveal or hide the areas you wish to expose high or under expose. The technique is via masking, dodging, burning and erasing specific areas.

Caution: You do need to shoot the succession pretty quick..3 FPS or better or the layers will not line up well.

Hope that helps a little.
Happy shooting,

Pete

  Thanks Pete

I understand about some photos taking up more memory, but there shouldn't be such a huge difference between the cards one holding 130 photos and one only holding 79 pics.

The photo of the bridal party, I metered for the Brides skin, so I don't know why she is so off.... bizarre! I will have to bring a pic in of it, she looks really wierd. All the other photos were fine and the metering was good. So I am just baffled about this.

Yes, to see the photo in question would be of great help in analyzing this. Memory cards are sectored just as a hard drive is. Perhaps, by what you are describing, is that the card wrote to a corrupt area in that one shot..Hmm? Just a thought.

What cam are you using?
It almost sounds like 130 to 79 is JPEG to RAW ratio..but I doubt you set the cam on RAW w/o knowing it.

Definitely was on jpeg, I checked. I am going to see if I can see the pics while the memory card is in the camera, if so, maybe there is a way of saving them. But definitely can't find them when I load the card into the computer and open up the portable e drive to view.

I'll bring the pic in tomorrow.

When I look at your question, the first thing I want to ask is "what was your ISO?" Higher ISO will take up more memory. Slap a formatted card in your camera, and set it at ISO 100....How many images do you get? Then without taking any shots, change your ISO to 800 or 1600, now what does it read?

natalie, did you change the iso rating between shots at all, the higher you go the less images you will get on a card, also check your missing pictures are not in a newly created directory etc

Hi there, I did change my ISO quite often, but I noticed this when I put the cards in my camera initially while I was checking my equipment, the ISO was set at 200.

I checked the recall numbers and unfortunately my Lexars are on the list. So now I know what happened. I also now realise I lost photos of the certificate being presented, certificate and rings (which can be reproduced)and candids of people congratulating them etc. Not happy, but at least they weren't too important.

What is with the cards always creating new directories? I can have about 10 directories on the card, but only pics on the last 2 or 3 of them. Can anyone explain this? Yep, I checked all the directories, photos aren't there at all.

I'll post a pic of the "ghosted" bride in a second.

A firend of mine who does wedding photography lost all his photos by accidentally deleting them from the card, but he told me he had found a program that can retrieve them, as although they are deleted the information is in fact still there. If it might help you find those lost photos, I'll ask him for the link to the web site that has the software.

Here Natalie, I used this for a while and found it helpful occasionally.
However in my opinion your images are gone, poof, kaput.

Exchange your Compact Flash Cards. Update the firmware on your camera.
Continue on your Merry Way.

Thanks everyone, I much appreciate your help. Although I formatted the cards last night, so I presume even if the photos were there, they aren't now!

Although I don't know who to send the cards to, as lexar don't have an Oz website.

What is firmware? Do I get it off the Canon site?
