Photography Question

Ruben L. Wade

How do you get dust out of a Lenz?

I have a Canon 20D and 17-85 lens. I can see dust on the inside of the lens and it will show up in pictures that I take that have a white or light background. What can I do about it?

  Hi Ruben,
you would have to clean the sensor...In your manual, they explain how to do this... You will need a blower to get the dust out. I have the same camera and lens and when purchased was already dirty ! I had to clean it then (thanks to Terry ) and again when it came back from the Canon center for focus problems (they did not clean it after working on it ...:O() Anyway, I also go from one lens to another and dust will go in, and you have to clean it once in a while. You could decide to sent it back to the Canon center or do it yourself...If I can do it, You can too...just be careful ! Good luck !

Sorry, I also meant to say...The dust you see on your image is probably dust on your sensor and not the dust in your lens. If it is, do the same thing: Take your lens off and blow the blower in your lens with its opening facing down... Do this 1st and then if you still see dust on ur images clean your sensor...

Cathy is right. Here are the directions to do it in camera:

Turn your camera on manual setting, then go into menu Scroll down until you see 'sensor clean' hit set button, Hit OK then shut camera off.

That is the in camera way to clean it if it is that.

If you see dust between the lens elements when you are looking through the lens with it off camera, there's good news. Forget about it. That dust should have no effect on images shot with the lens. It won't be focused onto the image. All lenses have traces of dust, especially zooms, since the push-pull effect can suck dust into the works. Don't worry about it, just enjoy photography.
