Model release question A couple of months ago, I went to a sporting event and I took some pictures of the athletes competing in that event. I put the pics on my website. Few days ago, a person contacted me about using my images for his print-in-demand book. I don't know if I want to charge for this yet. If I don't charge, do I need a model release from the athletes on the pictures? Thanks.

Usually if you use a persons photo for any kind of advertising or other use, unless you are just taking the photo to give solely to them, the rule of thumb is GET A MODEL RELEASE. Whether your using their photo for your own advertising, selling it or giving it away, even posting it in your gallery or on your website, you should have a Model Release. This is primarily to CYA so you don't have to worry about any legal action down the road. Most legit business' will request a model release to use any of your photos of people to cover themselves also. There are many threads on this site on this subject. Put a search in for Model Release. Hope this helps! Jeff

Hi Arekmalang, Where are you located, here in the UK you can take pictures at public events, ie. soccer, cricket, atheletics etc. without a model release, you will have trouble getting an international agency to take anything without one though. I just use UK only agencies. Regards,

Jeff: Thanks for the link. Derek: I'm located in the USA. The picture is not for any agency, but for an individual who wants to publish a book.
