All around lense for Canon Rebel XT

I am thinking of purchasing a new lense for my Canon Rebel XT. In the meantime, since Im short of my budget(saving for next shopping) I am looking for something that I could use all around. Anything that I could use taking portraits and some not too far landscapes. Thank you so much and I am also going to take some of Jim's class.

Hi Michael, I also have the 350D - I've bought the Sigma 28-300 (Recently won Lens of the Year) check it out on the web. I'm very happy with it. From (almost) macro to portrait to zoom - works great!Check out recent shots on my gallery to see quality. Robyn

The 28-300 lenses give extended telephoto, but do not give a very wide angle view. A more general use zoom lense for the XT that will give wide angle (especially useful indoors, with groups or for landscapes) would start at about 17mm or 18mm. Typical are EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6, EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM, Sigma 18-125 f/3.5-5.6 DC, Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC, Sigma 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 DC and Tamron 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II.

Sorry Michael, I was tired when I replied I do have the 28-300 for my normal SLR but have bought the Sigma 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 DC for my digital - in fact i'm delighted with both - got this one for the w/angle!
