Ideally, your print or slide film should be fine grained. Scanning slides, in my experience, seems to give nicely saturated colors, but often unavoidably blocked up shadow detail. Many negative films scan extremely well, needing little or no tweaking for contrast and brightness, but sometimes don't give saturated colors unless the lighting conditions are just so, or Photoshop tweaking brings the colors out. However, I have gotten prints that have the bright, but natural, colors I like with both slide and negative film. I think the tricks are in the choice of fine grained films and in careful exposure.
